hm, lets see - from what I gather using google, Manning didn't even really wipe the disk ONCE. He deleted and reinstalled. Oopps. Of course, all the old data structures were there.
Memory cards are a different beast, but this is about hard disks. |
From what I read, he deleted his files on his personal Macintosh laptop, then reinstalled the operating system, electing to do a full format of the disk. Then, at somebody's advice, he also did a zero-wipe of the disk, but only opted for a single pass.
But, I don't feel like looking for what I read, so let's assume I misunderstood it, and that you're right and I'm wrong. Conclusion: a single wipe of a disk is adequate, as you said.
If all else fails, give the disk to a naked gladiator in a Turkish prison. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

I once held my bulk tape eraser electromagnet up against a spinning hard drive until it could no longer read the servo platter. Continual recalibrates ensued. No messy residue, either.
