Greetings,

I recently upgraded my video card from an ATI card to an nVidia card. I am trying to set up the kernel. However, with the 3.3.8 gentoo-sources kernel there is no option for nVidia in the Direct Rendering section within menuconfig or within the .config file itself. Also, the module installs fine but when I launch xinit manually there are no screens available. Lastly, I didn't have to have a xorg.conf for my ATI card, but will I need one with the nVidia card?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Are you trying to use the proprietary or open source driver for your nvidia card? The kernel setup is different for each.

Also, I think the configuration duties of xorg.conf got scooted over to configuration files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d. I'm not sure how /etc/X11/xorg.conf plays with the files in this directory.

xorg.conf overrides settings in /usr/share/...

Proprietary nVidia driver has it's own DRI. You need also a minimal xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
EndSection

Well under the direct rendering section you can find nouveau(nVidia cards)
that has worked fine for me, you should try it out
you should also look out for the penguin logo when gentoo is loading, if it is there, then your graphics card is detected.
maybe this will be helpful

On my installation the Nouveau driver is in: Device Drivers > Staging Drivers

Thanks for the help everyone...it seems as though I forgot that you could use Xorg -configure to create a xorg.conf file. Once I did that all is fine. I will optimize it later but at least it works.

Xorg -configure is obsolete, do not do that. It will create a file full of cruft.
