Like any of the other socio-economic/political extremes, extreme libertarianism isn't practical. That doesn't mean a libertarian political party or society isn't, and it certainly doesn't mean a "somewhat more" libertarian Republican Party isn't.
Democrats used to the party of social liberty, but are now the party of economic authoritarianism, while pandering a bit, when necessary to social liberty, in order to maintain their coalition (which I used to call the Island of Misfit Toys). If you want to know to whom I refer, just look under Obama's bus.
The Democratic Party has become a case study in hypocrisy. On the one hand, they are advocating gay rights and abortion; on the other, they are cracking down on marijuana use and pushing the envelope of the police state to unprecedented levels that no-shit resemble George Orwell's 1984.
So even if they managed to get 2% more of the vote in all the right states, they've got problems, too. They've moved rapidly from the Social Libertarian / Economic Authoritarian quadrant well into the Social Authoritarian / Economic Authoritarian quadrant. If you want it in pictures, they've moved more than halfway from Bill Clinton to Josef Stalin.
Republicans can remain relevant by moving to remain juxtaposed (moving from from Social Authoritarian / Economic Libertarian to Social Libertarian / Economic Libertarian) and remaining closer to center.
If that means no longer kowtowing to Christian fundamentalists, so be it. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

That's how the other 6 and a bit billion people see it. The democrats are just another conservative party that lets gays, non-whites and women have a go too. |

The main differences between the parties now are economic. Morons think the main differences are social, because that's what the demagogues want them to think. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

really? spending obama is SO different from spending bush.
I prefer to call Obamacare Romneycare, as Romney was the main architect of it.
People are so harsh on Romney. I was reading a liberal blog about how Romney will just go back to making millions of shady dollars, and leave no lasting legacy in public life. What about ObamaRomneycare? |

Spending is not a boolean matter. It is very much a matter of degrees. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

| Funny thing is, actual incidents of rape occurred at Occupy rallies, but not at TEA Party rallies. |
