Hi *.

I'm setting up new server and have weird and annoying problem with it. With gentoo-sources everything is working smooth, but when I switch to hardened-sources and try to emerge glibc, machine reboots - always in the same place. Unfortunately server is placed in another city and I don't have direct access to display, only ssh or terminal through ttyS0 [it's HP ProLiant so I see everthing since BIOS].

Here's config for working gentoo kernel 3.6.4: http://bpaste.net/show/55080/
For non-working hardened 3.5.4-r1: http://bpaste.net/show/55081/

I've also tried hardened 3.6.3, but it didn't change anything. All kernels were configured from scratch, no make oldconfig. As you can see in config, I've disabled reboot on hard/soft lockups, kernel.panic in sysctl is set to 0. Still, when I'm on hardened, no matter the profile default/linux/amd64/10.0/server or hardened/linux/amd64, after emerge -1 glibc I see http://bpaste.net/show/55083/ . After the last line (always the same) servers stops responding, nothing shows up on the terminal (no stack/panic/whatever), nothing is written to /var/log. Simply like I would press reset button. After few seconds BIOS boots up.

I'm really lost here, any ideas?

If you can build the code under a vanilla kernel, but cannot build it under a hardened kernel, then it is probably a bug in the hardened kernel patches. Can you identify the specific hardening option that triggers this?

Found it :) After few hours of testing, compiling [I had to mrproper it, without that tests were inconclusive] and rebooting I have a result.

CONFIG_PAX_RANDMMAP

With this option turned on, emerging sys-libs/glibc-2.15-r3 reboots server always during execution of last command from this log: http://bpaste.net/show/55083/ Should I report it somewhere?

Yes, file a bug for hardened at https://bugs.gentoo.org/
