Just installed by hand (still no ebuild) Urban Terror, a total transformation MOD for quake3. I recommend it to you all. It pretends to be realistic, with realistic weapons, damage, maps, etc.

Give it a try! _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

Also the Urban Terror linux forums have a nice post about how to get it all installed and working.
The mod itself rocks. I just wish they would've released 2.6 instead of waiting on the new point release from ID. They supposedly already patched all known wall hacks and that would have been atleast been something. Lots of wallhacker/aimbots since somebody released a GPL'd bot. (This is what ID's new point release is being created to address)
See ya on the pubs. |

By the way, what do you use to browse gameservers?
XQF doesn't work (don't know why), it refreshes only 6 servers, if I select more or do a refresh to the entire list, it does nothing.
Very fucking problem :(
Does the same with quake3, unreal, etc. _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

Just searched the forums a little and saw it is a qstat problem.
I did rebuild it with only "-O0 -pipe" and it worked. With -O2 it doesn't. _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

Played Urban Terror a while back and it is indeed a great game to play. Playing with the bots is great fun but unfortuantly with my little 56k modem, playing online games is awful with big ping replies!

Tuxisuau,
What the framerates is like in Urban Terror? I remember while testing out the beta version that it was around 60 to 70 fps (Which is a bit slow for a duron 800 + geforce 2mx where quake 3 went over 100fps).

Err, I hate to break it to you, but your machine isn't going to be all that flash in most mods for Quake 3.
The standard DM/CTF/TDM/RA3 maps are fine for your system, because they very basic in structure, designed for mashing rockets/LG/pineapples everywhere.
The maps in mods like UT, RQ3 etc, all use a lot more structure, more polygons etc on the screen = worse framerate.
I wouldn't blame the maps so much, RTCW is worse than most UT/RQ3 maps for example, it's just the game engine.
My P4 2Ghz + 512MB RAM + GF3 sometimes drops below 125fps playing RTCW, but then I think that is because my brother is always playing in 1024x768@32bit or higher all the time |

As I remember to have readed in their FAQ, their maps/models/etc. are lots more complex than quake3 ones. So the framerates would be lower. I had inestability problems with nvidia running in AGP mode, so I had it to run using kernel's AGPGART mode. Quake3 worked perfectly, but in some maps Urban Terror was terribly slow with the complex textures, and smooth with lowdetail ones. That's why I did discover X was unable to load the module cause I didn't set the correct module aliases. Now I load AGP at boot time, and it seems the sysmem2graphicsmem uploading is the most critical bottleneck, cause now it seems to be very smooth with highcomplexity textures too :) _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

Submitted a new bug for the ebuild.
It's bug# 6928 and the url is:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6928
You should place the ebuild at /usr/portage/app-games/quake3-urbanterror/ and, when warned, make the digest with "ebuild /route/to/ebuild digest".
By the way, if you did install the game by yourself, move the beta24 and beta25 zips into /usr/portage/distfiles, and then emerge the ebuild :-). _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

For the ebuild to be included we need to specify the exact license. Their website isn't very clear about the copyright/license so I asked them about their license in their forums:
http://forums.urbanterror.net/default.asp?action=getTopic&discussionID=12&topicID=5755
By the way, if you try the ebuild I will be happy if you post some feedback. _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

True about the complex maps though, RTCW ran fine on this machine with some framerates dropping here and there.
Cool about the ebuilds, will look forward to that

If you guys like urban terror, you should definately check out Navy Seals. It's another mod for quake3, similar in some ways to urban terror, but it goes for even more realism. It has very nice eye candy and gameplay that gets you completely hooked once you get used to it. Teamwork is much more important in nsq3 (Navy Seals) than in urban terror. There are also mission based levels: capture areas, kill the VIP, get secret info, plant & dissarm bombs.
I was a top urban terror player for a year but switched completely to nsq3 when it came out.
Edit: oops, forgot the link. http://ns-co.net |

Well make an ebuild and I might just emerge it :) Perhaps we get a games-quake category of our own if we get enough mod ebuilds :P |

I'll try them after 1.3 appear. But... What's Navy Seals license? I'm unable to find that, and if I want to make a ebuild, that's necessary to know that.
With Urban Terror I've got the same error, they say "free" but don't specify anything more. I asked them in their forum, but by the moment they seemed to ignore me. _________________ IM me at tuxisuau@jabber.7a69ezine.org |

I'll see if I can get back to you on that. I don't think most of these mods are free software much less opensource, just gratis.
They may however encourage an ebuild. The main developer is defcon and they hang out on irc.enterthegame.com #nsq3 |

Navy Seals... I cannot believe I've forgotten all about that game. I have been following it for some times and then lost track!
Would be cool to get a ebuild of it though =)

ok one of the developers has said the mod falls under the same quake3 license as the other mods, so it should be okay to make an ebuild for it.
There's a fresh thread about it in one of their forums.
So if anyone is inclined sounds like it's cool to make an ebuild. |

Well I put a navy seals ebuild up at my ebuild site: http://stud.upb.de/~q9tharkun/
It just put GPL for the license for now, the navy seals forums can't be reached (no connection to the database :)). Nothing special about this ebuild tho, just unzip the zip :) |

Man, urban terror rules. Its the perfect balence of realism/fast action for me. I'm FSK405# timmfin member of the FSK405 clan. If you like CTF you gotta check out our server at fsk405.net, one of the best UrT Ctf servers out there. Right now I unfortunatly play Q3 in windows but theat may change someday (but my clan uses Roger Wilco for team chatting, not avail in linux). Anyone tried the linux team chat progs? </end my big plug for UrT>
