PostPosted: Tue Oct 23, 2012 10:25 pm    Post subject: Systemd system only, GDM starts, logins allways fail Reply with quote

So that-s pretty much the story, I-ve removed baselayout, moved to the native files for configuration, and then re-emerged gdm.
Also got rid of openrc, and sysvinit since it-s supposed to be a drop-in replacement (talking about systemd here)
Apparently, GDM is trying to talk to dbus wich is started and running, but gets denied it-s petitions...
Thats why login fails..
Any ideas?

"methinks" you're missing Avahi service, please enable it :)

Ok now, that is a joke for sure.
GDM is disabled because I manually start it, right now I use startx with a fluxbox configuration file.
Avahi? Why would I need it et all? Zeroconf equivalent from windows..

Not a joke -- I had a similar problem with GDM when migrating to systemd, solved by enabling Avahi. For some freaky reason it is needed.
If it doesn't help you, you can always disable it later, right? Worth a try and few minutes of spare time?

I Guess you're right, I'll try..
I noted it doesn't have a systemd flag though, how about the service/unit file?

what does "emerge -pv polkit" says?
On my system I had to unmask hard masked (-systemd) flag recently. And yes, GDM has to be emerged with systemd USE flag enabled (then you'll have service file available).

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] sys-auth/polkit-0.107-r1 USE="gtk introspection pam -examples -kde -nls (-selinux) (-systemd)" 0 kB

Exactly as you said.
But adding it to package.use didn't quite make it...
How do you do that last part of forcing it?

Been a while sine I've use the feature, but I think it would be
/etc/portage/use.mask:

-systemd

look at /usr/portage/arch/<arch>/use.mask for examples.

Using systemd I have these USE masks to negate profile USE masks:
Code:
# this is file: /etc/portage/profile/use.mask
udisks2
consolekit
-systemd

Oddly, I've created both files named in the last two posts, to no avail...
Ideas? Waiting sitting until polkit launches a new version sound temptative at this point, meanwhile leave baselayout, openrc, and sysvinit there just because otherwise I get a broken experience...
I'm using sys-apps/portage-2.1.11.31
