A few days ago I updated my system (but no new kernel). When restarting the system the screen flickers and turns black. Sometimes I'm able to restart the computer using Ctrl-Alt-Del, sometimes it's pretty much locked up.

First I thought it was a problem with X, but by starting openrc in interactive mode I found out that starting udev causes this trouble. Syslog doesn't show any failures when I start udev using "/etc/init.d/udev -v start", the last entries in syslog are initializing the graphics card, apparently successful.

Does anyone have some advice how to find out what exactly is causing this lockup?

Thanks in advance!
Bernd

Do you have CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y and CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT=y set in .config :?:

That was a problem with udev a while back...

No, isn't set.

I checked which packages I updated before the problem occured: portage, pkgconfig, cracklib, dbus, dbus-glib, qt... Doesn't sound like any culprits, or might this be caused by dbus? revdep-rebuild doesn't show any errors...

Does anybody know i there is a way to check file consistency? After the crashs and hard resets fsck found some unallocated (binary) data which I cannot allocate to some package.

ok I was able to pin down the problem to the framebuffer kernel modules.

When I delete the following modules from the directory, udev starts up properly. (It did start up properly before, but the screen went black...)

I still don't understand why the problem started all in a sudden? I didn't touch the kernel and it worked before?

Code:

modules/xxx/kernel/drivers/video:

cfbcopyarea.ko
cfbfillrect.ko
cfbimgblt.ko
fb.ko
console/bitblt.ko
console/fbcon.ko
console/font.ko
console/softcursor.ko

Apparentely tis is only necessary for udev >= 171, I'm still runing udev-171-r6
