neither genkernell nor manual config will compile, i haven't touched the settings yet

what now? another image?

genkernel compiled but stopped on modules, will gentoo start with kernel only?

Personally, I've never been able to simply 'make' (or 'genkernel all') a kernel release - I've always had to set it up to match my setup.

Also, if you were able to compile the kernel (vmlinux or bzImage) then technically yes your computer could boot into linux. If you are dependent on modules to get your system completely up and running (non compiled-in filesystem for example) then you may have an error on bootup. Nothing that can't be solved by setting up the kernel to fit your current setup though.

Run
Code:
genkernel --menuconfig all
Edit menuconfig to
Device Drivers --->
SCSI device support --->
either: unselect (if you have no low level scsi devices; this takes them all out)
[ ] SCSI low-level drivers --->
or: unselect (if you do have low level scsi devices, this takes the bad ones out)
< > LibFC module (NEW)
< > LibFCoE module (NEW)
then exit menuconfig saving the configuration and allow genkernel to complete.
