Hello!

I updated my @World on Sunday and since then I can't get past Slim to loading Fluxbox or Gnome. The only result in both situations is a black screen with an X mouse cursor.

I tried troubleshooting X through the 'Gentoo X configration' page. By doing 'xstart' as root it loaded OK with 3 shells and the clock, and so I managed to run this browser for starting this topic... :( So I guess no problem with X itself...

Doing 'startfluxbox' as user returns:
Code:
xmodmap:  unable to find display ''
Error:  Couldn't connect to XServer

Here is the Xorg.log file:
Code:

Try this:

Code:

su
qlist -IC x11-drivers/

Re-emerge everything the above command outputs, then restart X.

Hello Audiodef!

I did it but unfortunately there no difference.

Then I noticed that on 'eselect profile list' the '[1] default/linux/amd64/10.0' was selected.
I switched to '[3] default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop' and reemerged Gnome and Fluxbox.

Using SLIM neither of the 2 choices work, both resulting in a black screen with the X mouse cursor.

'startfluxbox' returns:
Code:
xmodmap:  unable to find display ''
Error:  Couldn't connect to XServer

'gdm' starts normally with its own login page and all my previous settings.

Btw, Audiodef thank you for the great 'Gentoo Audio workstation walkthrough'. It has helped me a great deal into building this computer and using Linux in making music and recording my band! Thanks! :)

UPDATE:
Fluxbox starts also if it is chosen via GDMs login page. Which concludes that this is a SLIM issue...

It seems there are 2 diferrent Gentoo SLIM wiki pages, the newest being this:
http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SLiM

The other one does seem different and older:

You're welcome! :) I know Gentoo is not a common choice for a professional computer DAW, but I consider it an ideal platform for it because of the high level of tweaking for an efficient and effective system. It's always nice to hear that my guide is helpful. Comments are always welcome, too.

Hm... please post your /etc/slim.conf. Maybe there's something in there someone can spot. It's clearly not an Xorg issue.

And then... teach us this weirding way, Muad'Dib. :P

Thank you! So far it has not betrayed me. Together with my RME9658 it's a great tool, with Ardour, Hydrogen and Jamin! It will be put to the test i a month or two when I will start recording a new amp I am building. I'll PM you when I post a tune if U want !! :D

I gave up hope prematurely yesterday and unmerged it putting gdm as default login manager, although slim.conf is still in here. Here it is:
Code:

David Lynch did an awesome job turning the book into a movie. The SciFi Channel's version was entertaining, but lacked the dark quality that seemed *right* for the story. I do hope they make God Emperor of Dune, though. I want to see Leto turn into a worm!

Sure, PM me when you've made a tune from Gentoo Studio! I'd love that. Also, there's a thread in the forums on ardour.org called "Made With Ardour" you can post in. Maybe I should create a section of links somewhere called "Made With Gentoo Studio".

Your slim.conf looks OK. If you still had it, I would have suggested commenting out the sessions line and un-commenting the sessiondir line.

If you want to try another lightweight login manager, checkout LXDM (it's in Portage).

I concur! Seen the movie almost 30 times, it's amazing and very deep! I read GEOD last year, jawdropping, I would really like to see THAT, although I wish some of it would be done in old school graphics, aka the Muppet Factory's work on "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" film.

Aha, I've posted an instrumental song there. Not very nicely recorded, it was in my small room with a small cab producing lots of static waves on distortion, but anyway... It's called "We are One". Here's a link:

I had done that, but it didn't help. I am sticking to the GDM login manager for the time being, I've also put Fluxbox as default session, so no sweat!

Thanks again! :) "Long live the fighters" ;)

Very nice composition. I enjoyed listening!

SLiM is nice, but every once in a while, it's a real joker. I had to switch from SLiM to LXDM in the Gentoo Studio stage 4 tarball because when I unpack the tarball, SLiM just doesn't work, even though it did before I packed it up. LXDM, on the other hand, proved to be reliable. All of my machines at home (that have a WM or DE) use SLiM.

I rarely buy DVD's, but the David Lynch "Dune" was a must have. I bought the deluxe edition with the fancy aluminum case. It has some neat special features, including some animated stuff.

And now... STILL HAVE WORK TO DO!

*boom*

Very nice composition. I enjoyed listening!
Thank you! I will be re-recording it soon for a better sound.

*boom*

My DVD was a gift from one of my best friends... he is the one that got me into Linux, actually. Anyway, go and WORK now! Catch you later :D (We're way too off-topic, I will PM you next time, hehe)
