i didn't see a bug report for this yet so it might be something with just my system. Is anyone else having this issue?

Looks to me like you ran out of memory.
You need tons of ram for Gentoo these days.
Grab a old harddrive and make a big chunk of swap.
That recently got me through a update.

I have plenty of ram off this server which is odd. i submitted a question to the devs and they blamed it on gcc. It looks like once i try to compile the code memory does take a dump. must just be some bad coding in there somewhere causing it to be a resource hog. i've got several instances off aws so will just spin up another or look for alternatives in getting this to compile. thanks

 With MAKEOPTS="-j12" you might not have as much as you think.
