Where can he buy it (physical store) at San Jose, CA ? | I'd check with Google to see if they list retail partners. Staples is one that was mentioned, but no guarantee it is in stock. |
The list I found is:
-Gamestop
-Staples
-Office Depot
-Best Buy
-Adorama? (camera store)
They've been selling pretty fast. The only reason I found one at Staples is because nobody knew they were available for sale yet. That morning I got it the email went out that Staples could sell them. |

I did find this, thinking about ordering it. Google has one on the play store as well, not sure which I like better. The one in the Play Store is not available yet.
There's also an invisibleshield out for it now, when I looked last Friday/Saturday there was nothing. |
looks a bit plasticy.
http://www.amazon.com/Exact-Leather-Google-Android-Tablet/dp/B008INVV7M
looks a bit better
Only thing that made me raise an eyebrow with this was the powerbrick. it is bent tinned copper wire used to plug into the country-specific plug. Cheap, have they REALLY gone cheap on the powerbrick to keep the overall cost low? - it is larger than other bricks providing similar wattage _________________ A free press is the unsleeping guardian of every other right that free men prize; it is the most dangerous foe of tyranny. Well, I'm on my second Nexus 7 now. After having it for a couple days I noticed the screen was popping out of the case on the one side. Called Google and they told me it's a defect and to exchange it. Had to wait a couple days to get replacement stock though...
I should've taken a picture. It was weird, the actual glass lifted out on the left side. I could push it down and it would click (sort of) but a few seconds later there was a pop and it popped back up.
Koala Kid: np - remember that there's probably limited or no stock at the stores. It's pretty dang popular. I know the Staples where I am sold their shipment of 8 in less than an hour... |

I never even looked at mine! It could be wrapped aluminum foil for all I know. |

Yeah, I figured that out from reading reports on the internetz
I'll buy it anyway, if not now, then online later and send via one of the companies who specialize in that. _________________ Digital Gunfire |

I was googling around to see how (ahem) durable the Nexus 7.
I found a video where they drop both the Nexus 7 and an iPad from multiple heights and compare the damage. They also dunked it in water bathtub-style.
At least it looks like the Nexus will fare better than the iPad. |

After some messing around I finally got mtpfs working. Now I can actually copy media to the damn thing.
Create a udev rule: /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
| Code: |
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="18d1", ATTR{idProduct}=="4e41", MODE="0666", OWNER="<yourusername>"
|
Make sure the Nexus is not plugged in to the PC, restart udev:
| Code: |
$ /etc/init.d/udev restart
|
Reconnect the Nexus if needed. Make a directory and make sure it's writeable:
| Code: |
$ mkdir /media/Nexus7
$ chmod a+rwx /media/Nexus7
|
Then mount the damn thing:
| Code: |
$ mtpfs -o allow_other /media/Nexus7
|
To unmount:
| Code: |
$ umount /media/Nexus7
|
Took several tries to try to get it working. Honestly I don't know if all the steps are required, but that's everything I did to be able to copy files. |

Is it faster than adb push? I always use adb to push files to my Galaxy Nexus at 4MB/s, but the Nexus 7 is unbearably slow at 1MB/s :/ _________________ ~amd64 13.0 // linux-3.9 // gcc-4.8 // glibc-2.17 // xorg-server-1.14 // dwm-6.0 |

I never timed it, so I don't know. Maybe I'll trying copying something to it later and timing it.
I only copied a few eBooks to it yesterday, but those weren't very large.
Edit:
| Code: |
$ time cp * /media/Nexus7/Videos/
real 3m7.319s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m3.890s
$ time sync
real 0m0.115s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s
|
| Code: |
$ du --max-depth=1
1739288 ./Videos
$ du --max-depth=1 -h
1.7G ./Videos
|
Size of data transferred: 1739288 KB (1.7 GB) / 1698.5 MB (dunno if du reports KB or KiB, I divided by 1024 to get this value.)
Total time: 187.434 seconds
Transfer rate: 9.06185644013 MB/sec
Assuming my math is fine. Is that good? That's kind of slow compared to my USB drive.
I wonder if the Nexus 7 will even play those files... |

If you want to avoid doing the math use: | Code: | | rsync -HavPS ./ /media/Nexus7/Videos/ |
or even | Code: | | for f in *; pv -petrab $f >/media/Nexus7/Videos/$f |
NB: Code above is untested, dumping from my /dev/brain |

usb hard drive is plenty fast on my nexus 7.
there are also some benchmarking apps in the market that score I/O _________________ Now, with penguins, (cuddly such), "contented" means it has either just gotten laid, or it's stuffed on herring. Take it from me, I'm an expert on penguins, those are really the only two options.
