Code:
* Starting syslog-ng ...
     Error creating persistent state file; filename='/var/lib/misc/syslog-ng.persist-', error='Read-only file system (30)'
      * start-stop-daemon: failed to start `/usr/sbin/syslog-ng'
       * Failed to start syslog-ng                                                                                                                              [ !! ]

Is what i get. after bootup i tried rc-status default and it says syslog-ng is running. confusing. everything else seems to work fine.

/var/lib/misc/syslog-ng.persist should be a binary file. I don't think you should be getting a file named /var/lib/misc/syslog-ng.persist-, with a dash at the end. Maybe re-emerge syslog-ng?

Did you add anything to /etc/conf.d/syslog-ng?

Nope, i just did a normal install, this all used to work, the only thing that is different from my usual install right now (i did a fresh reinstall) is that i'm using kernel 3.5.4 and i have quite a handful of useflags right now.

yesterday when i made this post, i had installed everything with the ~amd64 keyword, now its only the kernel, and rc-status default does not show syslog-ng as started anymore.

i'll try re-emerging it... no success...

another perhaps noteworthy thing that happened in my install is that crontab /etc/crontab gave me crontab: command not found (for fcron)

i will try re-emerging sylsog-ng with the ~amd64 keyword... no change. i removed the keyword and re-emerged syslog-ng-3.2.5 (instead of 3.5.5)

If i try to start it by typing syslog-ng i don't get an error.

tried renaming the file to *persist- instead of *persist and that just gives me the same

Code:
Error creating persistent state file; filename=' /var/lib/misc/syslog-ng.persist-' , error='Read-only file system (30)'
start-stop-daemon: failed to start '/usr/sbin/syslog-ng'
Failed to start syslog-ng
ERROR: syslog-ng failed to start

of course... because its probably a temporary directory right? silly me...

I tried making 3.4.9 (current stable) eselect kernel set to it, and emerging syslog-ng and rebooting. did not help.

do you have a separate partition for /var and mounted it read-only?

Nope, my partition setup is just

/dev/sda3 /boot
/dev/sda6 /
/dev/sda5 swap

I also now tried to do a fresh reinstall (without re-making the partitions, i just removed all files from them) following the handbook to the letter all the way through, which had been working everytime i'd done it for about a week now (i did it a couple of times) but this time i got this error anyways.

rc-status sysinit says syslog-ng is running (even if i added it as default... same with my cron daemon)

Since its running, i don't let this failure at boot bother me really... but its ugly to get an error like that at boot and gives me some concern.

You mention this started happening with a change in the kernel. If you boot with a previous kernel, does this happen? If not, "kernel bug" comes to mind.

rabcor,

What does
Code:
emerge --info =$(equery l app-admin/syslog-ng)
return :?:

Also what's the output of these :?:
Code:
cat  /var/lib/logrotate.status

ls -la /var/lib/logrotate.status

ls -la /var/lib/misc/

I know this is an old thread but since it's left hanging I figured I'd add my 5 cents.

I had the same issue and BillWho pointed me in the right direction: after deleting /var/lib/misc/syslog-ng.persist* everything was fine again.

Thank you, BillWho!
