Can you hibernate as root, e.g. with pm-hibernate ? If not, the problem is not with permissions/polkit.

Sorry for delay, but I was without internet.

When I try "pm-hibernate" my xorg crashes and if I try it without startx, my screen turns black and 3 seconds later back to normal.

Does dmesg say anything interesting across your hibernation cycle?

If not, you'll have to compile everything as modules in your kernel and blacklist them one by one until you can get hibernation to work without X.

Then you have to cross your fingers that hibernation will work with X, given whatever GPU setup you have.

(I would continue to use pm-hibernate, as pm-utils can handle many hardware-specific quirks.)

When hibernation fails, and you come back, in a terminal type "dmesg". In addition to messages from the hibernation code itself, there may be messages from different drivers as the hardware is suspended and re-awakened.

pm-utils log their stuff in /var/log/pm-*.log

Maybe you can get important hint in these logs.
