|
|
| Quote: | Pono, a proprietary digital musical system that can play full master recordings and will, he hopes, restore some of the denuded sonic quality to modern music. [...]
Young gets most worked up when he talks about Pono, the music system he has developed. It is beyond the hobby stage: Warner Brothers has agreed to make its catalog available on Pono, and Young and Roberts are negotiating with other record companies and investors. [...]
[We] hopped in yet another car, a ’78 El Dorado, to listen to the Pono system. Right now, it needs a trunk full of gear, but Young and Roberts are working with a British manufacturer to come up with a portable version. He gave a demonstration that replicated MP3s, CDs, Blu-ray and then the full Pono sound.
“You are getting less than 5 percent of the original recording,” he said at first. He put on Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and then switched to Pono. The horns jumped and the car was filled with lush, liquid sound. He madly toggled between different outputs to make sure I was getting it. |
The rest of the article is just about Neil because he is pitching a book. Could be disappointing, depending on your view of him. Neil Young Comes Clean. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.

I still have a nice (tube based) "stereo" (it's not a stereo though, the amplifier and per-amp have multiple channels), but I also have my piano, my wife's cello, and my daughter's violin. Nothing sounds so good as actual acoustic instruments.
Thankfully, we have Jazz Minds & Art cafe in town, so I can listen to free form music virtually on demand... and though our symphony has gone, our Chamber Music Hawaii musicians are keeping live performance of serious music a constant pleasure.
All of that aside... if Pono is as good as Mr. Young is preaching... I'll buy it in a cocaine heartbeat. _________________ If I had a dollar for every time capitalism was blamed for the problems caused by government, I'd be a fat filmmaker with a baseball cap |

That might have been an actual calculus made by the inventors. _________________ If I had a dollar for every time capitalism was blamed for the problems caused by government, I'd be a fat filmmaker with a baseball cap |

| The hell...if you want music to sound like music, then get the producers and masterers to stop destroying the dynamic range. |

Having some, and whether or not it is done properly to benefit.
Also, having these on your CC bill might raise some eyebrows...

I can do that. |
Here's an article about it (suitably, it is old but classic, and apparently updated):
| Quote: | WHAT HAPPENED TO DYNAMIC RANGE?
By Bob Speer
What happened to dynamic range is a question that should be asked of record labels, producers, artists, and last but not least, recording and mastering engineers. The question needs to be asked because we're the ones responsible for what's happened to our music. Much of the music we listen to today is nothing more than distortion with a beat. Great music is suffering because it lacks dynamic range. When music lacks dynamic range, it lacks punch, emotion, and clarity. |
| Quote: | Then one day we awoke to a new technology, "digital recording." Wow, now with a dynamic range of over 90 dB, our recordings could almost rival a live performance. Well, in theory, yes. However, the music industry had other ideas.
Rather than use this new technology to take advantage of it's wide dynamic range, the music industry went in the opposite direction. They decided that louder is better. Suddenly, we found ourselves in a race to see whose CD was the loudest. The only way to make CDs louder was to keep compressing the signal more and more. That's where we are today. Everyone's trying to make their CD sound louder than everyone else's. The term that is used for this process is called, hot. Yes, most of today's music is recorded hot. The net result, distortion with a beat. ... more |

| La Sexorcisto by White Zombie is DDD and it has reasonable dynamic range. It's also from the '80s. |

I use my ears. If I have question I load up Audacity and take a look. The date an album was mastered is also a big hint. |
