Hello, there's no java SDK & JDK in portage? How to install it? Needed for applets to work

sure there is, but you have to keyword it and accept the license.

echo dev-java/oracle-jdk-bin Oracle-BCLA-JavaSE >> /etc/portage/packages.licenses

or you could have a look at icedtea, which only needs to be keyworded

oracle-jdk-bin is the official binary java version from Oracle. Read the portage output, you must download it manually from the Oracle website. dev-java/icedtea-bin (binary) and dev-java/icedtea (build from source) are the implementations of the OpenJDK project (build completely with free open source tools). Most java programms run with icedtea, but some java programms (which use the proprietary com.sun.* packages) don't run with icedtea but with oracle-jdk. So if open source is most important for you, go for icedtea. If stability is more important for you, go for oracle-jdk-bin. Or install both and switch with "java-config -L" and "java-config -s". _________________ # cd /pub/ # more beer

What stability do you mean there? Seems to me the only reason to use oracle-jdk would be the com.sun.* packages...

You're right. Stability is the wrong term. I meant to be on the safe side and ensure that all java applications will run.
