What is the point of the built-in screensaver? Doesn't DPMS manage the same thing?

# xset q
...
Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
timeout: 0 cycle: 600
...
DPMS (Energy Star):
Standby: 0 Suspend: 0 Off: 600
DPMS is Enabled
Monitor is On

If you just want to blank the screen, then using DPMS only probably takes up fewer resources.

I don't even use screensavers on desktop machines. I turn off DPMS and physically turn off my monitors when I'm AFK.

Does anyone know what the built-in "Screen Saver" is for?

Xorg give a lot of basics graphics applications not user friendly you can use. They are complementary to the main project. Because their objects are elementary, a lot of sophisticated and intuitive applications for the same purpose can be more attractives. Then you can disable the Xorg one. For example, Xscreensaver or Xlockmore instead of Xorg DPMS.

The Xorg project focus on graphic server, not on window manager or desktop environment.

Can xlockmore turn the screen completely off like DPMS can?
