Hello Gentoo forum,

I am running a recent version of Gentoo (32bit) with the KDE4 desktop (version 4.85) using Dolphin file manager on a desktop computer. I'm fairly certain that udev handles the mounting and not HAL since it is a recent version. When Dolphin is launched, all of my partitions show nicely as well as all of my USB hard drives. I can view the contents of all of these without any problem but as a regular user, I do not have write access to anything except my home folder and if I open Dolphin in root, I have write access to everything except for my USB hard drives and one Windows partition. So this poses a question - how can I have write access to everything as a regular user as well as a root user?

I have searched and searched for an answer but I haven't been able to solve this problem so taking it to a forum is my last resort.

If anybody will be kind enough to steer me in the right direction I will be most grateful.

Sincerely,
Roy

Did you install kde-base/solid?
And are you in the USB group?
Gerard.

Do you get a pop-up window when you plug something in a USB port?
Gerard.

Yes, I get a popup when I plug a drive into a USB port. When I try to create a blank folder on that drive, it says "could not make folder" which means it does not have write access.

Thanks anyway, gerard82.

I gave some wrong information in my original post. All of my USB drives are ntfs, not just some of them. After I later installed ntfs3g, I now have read and write permissions as a regular user on all USB drives but only as a root user for my ext3 partitions. If I want read and write permissions on my ext3 partitions I must be root. Is there a way that I can access these ext3 partitions with write permissions as a regular user?

Thanks,
Roy
