Hi guys Firstly I had like to know how to have my usb mounted on /dev/sdb1, I tried to used MAKEDEV to create the /dev/sdb1 and it does and when I tried to mount it I get the error the device is not valid. But when I run mount , I get
usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,devmode-0664,devgid=85).
Secondly I had like to know why my usb mouse is not working I followed the tutorial on this link http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/usb-guide.xml but there is no sucess..
Thanks in advanced.

Hi.

If you want your usb-disks to be available as /dev/sdb1, you do not need the usbfs.
From the little information you gave, here are some guesses:

Make sure you have enabled following kernel-options (and if they are compiled as modules, make sure that they are loaded) :
Code:

Device Drivers -> SCSI device support -> SCSI disk support
Device Drivers -> USB support
Device Drivers -> USB support -> EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB Mass Storage support

+ the driver for your host controller (for me it is 'Device Drivers -> USB support -> UHCI HCD')

It will not hurt to also enable this:
Code:

Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB announce new  devices

For your mouse, try to enable following additional to the HID-Stuff mentioned in the guide:
Code:

Device Drivers -> Input device support -> Event Interface
Device Drivers -> Input device support -> Mouse Interface

and make sure you got the 'evdev'-useflag enabled for the xorg-drivers-package, e.g. by having
Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse"

in your /etc/make.conf. If the useflag wasn't enabled, recompile the package 'xorg-drivers'.

Do you have configured xorg by using /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If so, try to start Xorg without having that file.

I have already done all what you explained before I threw the question in the forum. I didnt load the usbfs myself and I have got no clue on how to turn that off.
Thanks anyway

look for 'USB Device Filesystem' under 'USB support' in your kernel-config.

if all of the above has been done, can you please post the dmesg-output triggered by plugging your devices.

tobigen,

Its not clear when your usb mouse does not work, in the console or in Xorg.
If in Xorg, it needs to be connected when Xorg starts.

usbfs provides information on your usb devices. Its depreciated now in favour of lsusb -vvv
However there is a GUI tool that can parse /proc/bus/usb/devices
