Hi,

I noticed recently that the sound is not working anymore in some applications.
At least with totem and kaffeine

The sound works well with mplayer for example

I googled for my problem, but I have no clue.

Can anyone point me things to check, as I don't know where to look at.

Thanks

Can you find sound not working for any other programs? If not, the problem may be only related to those programs. By sound, do you mean all sound, or just sound from specific sources (streaming format, CD, etc.)?

One thing you can do is start totem or kaffeine from a terminal and see what the output says when it fails to produce sound.

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, some other programs works, such as mplayer and youtube movies in firefox.
The sound I am tying to play is a .wav file (from an phone answering machine) and also the DVB TV in kaffeine.

Here are the result when using CLI
Code:
$ totem /usr/share/sounds/login.wav

I'm not familiar with kaffeine, but it looks to me like the problem is indeed kaffeine, as opposed to a more system-wide problem. I suspect you should not be getting all these warnings and errors, especially the ones telling you that kaffeine may misbehave.

What if you try re-emerging kaffeine?

You said it doesn't work any more. I assume it did work previously. Did you notice it not working after an update?

Yes, I tried to re-emerge kaffeine, as well as totem.

The sound in both programs stopped to work after a huge emerge when I came back from hollidays. 7 weeks of updates.
I will be hard to find where it come from.

What's the relation between Kafffeine and Totem ? Kaffeine is from KDE and I think Totem comes from Gnome...
How do they connect to the sound system, using ALSA, or other program ?

Problem solved !

Totem and Kaffeine use pulseaudio, mplayer and firefox flash plugin does (apparently) not.
I read the pulseaudio wiki page http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/PulseAudio and found that the sound device was locked by some program
Code:
 # fuser /dev/snd/*
/dev/snd/controlC0:   4640  4889
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:    4640m
/dev/snd/seq:         4640
/dev/snd/timer:       4640

4640 was timidity. Once disabled, both application worked again.

The question is now, why timidity suddenly locked the device after the last system and world update...

I tend to avoid pulseaudio, as it creates issues for ALSA, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work. 8)

To avoid those huge and therefore troublesome updates, don't put it off for longer than once per month. I do updates on all seven Gentoo machines I manage exactly once per month, and when I do, I pipe the --pretend output of both emerge -vuDN world and depclean to log files. That way, when something breaks, I have an easy to find/read log and can roll back any culprits. It's saved me a lot of grief more than once!

I use to check for updates every 2 or 3 days usually.

But that time, I was away from home most of the summer...
