Hello!

I'm trying to install Gentoo on my new PC, but whenever I try to boot it I get the following kernel panic error: IMAGE
I don't have any CD/DVD drive in my PC, so i used Lili to create a bootable usb drive with Gento LiveDVD iso.
I have already tried changing SATA3 to IDE mode and changed several different options in UEFI, but nothing worked so far.
Pendrive is Sandisk USB 3.0, and hard drive is SSD OCZ Vertex4.

Thank you in advance for your assistance :)

is the problem occurring when you try to boot usb drive or have you completed installing and can't boot the installed system?

I have successfully copied LiveDVD files to USB drive to make it bootable, but it fails to launch Gentoo from it. I haven't instaled anything on my hard drive yet, just prepared a partition.

has the LiveDVD on the usb drive ever booted?
the livedvd is old enough that it may not handle usb3 well.
the error you see is usually a result of hardware problems or a mismatch between hardware and software (kernel).
I'd recommend a gentoo minimal install cd or system rescue cd (if you want a GUI) on a usb2.0 flash or external drive.

Nope, it did not boot - I get the kernel panic every time. I only see the welcome screen where I can choose between normal / no-fb / memtest.
I don't use USB 3.0 port (switched to regular 2.0) while booting, but the problem remains.

best estimate--the livedvd kernel is a mismatch for your hardware.
I'd recommend a gentoo minimal install cd or system rescue cd (if you want a GUI) on a usb flash or external drive.

Turns out minimal cd doesn't work either.

Code:
!! Media not found
>> No bootable medium found, waiting for new devices...
!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
!! Could not find the root block device in

I doubt liveDVD kernel differs from minimal CD kernel. Try something different, SystemRescueCd is good and GRML is another option.

SystemRescueCD worked just fine (although GUI crashed a couple of seconds after launching it, so I had to stick to terminal).
I have successfully installed Gentoo and I'm currently trying to set up X server, however when I try to emerge it I get circular dependancy error:

Code:
* Error: circular dependencies:

(virtual/jdk-1.6.0-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) depends on
 (dev-java/icedtea-bin-6.1.11.3-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)
  (virutal/jpeg-0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)
   (media-libs/libjpeg-turbo-1.2.1::gentoo), ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)
    (virtual/jdk-1.6.0-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime)

* Note that circular dependencies can often be avoided by temporarily
* disabling USE flags that trigger optional dependencies.

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependancy graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

dev-libs/libxml2:2

   (dev-libs/libxml2:2.8.0_rc1::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
     (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in that slot)

   (dev-libs/libxml2:2.8.0_rc1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
     dev-libs/libxml2[python] required by (media-libs/mesa-8.0.3::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

Here's my make.conf:

Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j9"
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64"
LINGUAS="en_US pl"
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"

XUSE="libnotify fuse kde kde4 opengl plasma qt4 truetype unsupported X xcomposite xinerama xorg xv"

SYNC="rsync://rsync.nl.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

Also, grub2 does not see my Windows 7. Do I need to manually edit /boot/grub2/grub.cfg? If so, do I need to use chainloader, or is there any other option?

Nix this in your make.conf:
Code:
MEDIAUSE="aac alsa ape ffmpeg flac gif jpeg jpeg2k lame mad matroska mp3 mp4 nsplugin ogg pdf png real vlc wavpack win32codecs x264 xvid"
NOTUSE="-gnome -gtk -gtk3 -ieee1394 -ipod -irda -pulseaudio"
OTHERUSE="bash-completion compiz emerald exif gadu hddtemp jack joystick lua lua-cairo spell"
SYSTEMUSE="apm bluetooth consolekit cxx dbus device-mapper fam hal ipv6 java mmx policykit python sse sse2 ssl syslog threads udev usb wifi wireless"
XUSE="libnotify fuse kde kde4 opengl plasma qt4 truetype unsupported X xcomposite xinerama xorg xv"
USE="${MEDIAUSE} ${NOTUSE} ${OTHERUSE} ${SYSTEMUSE} ${XUSE}"

Start with this:
Code:
USE="mmx sse sse2"

To see what USE flags are set by virtue of your profile:
Code:
emerge --info

The message from portage included
Quote:
* Note that circular dependencies can often be avoided by temporarily
* disabling USE flags that trigger optional dependencies.

which is true, particularly true for global use flags. Usually the use flag is removed the emerge is done the use flags are restored and emerge -uND world is run.

One problem solved: I just needed to disable "java" flag. I'm emerging KDE right now.
How about grub? Is chainloading the only option? And why didn't it find Windows 7 by itself?

I had not noticed that the marvelously automatic grub2 no longer found and made a menu entry for my windows xp. shows how often I use it.

Thank you very much! os-prober solved my problem, I can successfully boot to Windows as well.

One last final obstacle (I hope) before entering GUI: I've emerged xorg-drivers, xorg-server and kde-meta, and I can't get whole thing to work.

When I used VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" I got error due to nvidiafb support in kernel. After that, I've changed make.conf to VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau" and the drivers emerged successfully, but still every time I try to execute startx or startkde I get either:
Code:
$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

or:
Code:
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 59: twm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 60: xclock: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 63: exec: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 61: xterm: command not found
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc: line 62: xterm: command not found
xinit: connection to X server lost

Here's /var/log/Xorg.0.log: LINK

http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Nouveau
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/kde/kde4-guide.xml

you can leave out synaptics if you have no touchpad, leave out nouveau-drm if 3d acceleration is of no interest
Code:
nano /etc/make.conf
edit to add if missing
Quote:
VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics"

Code:
mkdir /etc/portage
nano /etc/portage/package.keywords
edit to add x11-base/nouveau-drm
Code:
emerge xorg-server xf86-video-nouveau nouveau-drm xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-synaptics

Code:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/98-keyboard.conf
edit to add
Quote:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
EndSection

run
Code:
X -retro
if you get a black and white stipple screen with a movable mouse pointer X/xorg works. ctrl-alt-backspace to exit.
Code:
emerge kdebase-meta
nano /etc/conf.d/xdm
if necessary edit to include DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm"
Code:
ls -l /etc/X11/Sessions
should produce a list of display managers/windows managers/desktops ready to run a session
Code:
nano /etc/env.d/90xsession
edit to XSESSION="KDE-4" assuming spelling matches that found in /etc/X11/Sessions
Code:
reboot
upon reboot try
Code:
startx

I have followed both Gentoo KDE Guide and X Server Configuration HOWTO without any success.

Is /etc/portage/package.keywords the same as /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords?
I don't have a /etc/conf.d/xdm. Am I supposed to create it manually?
X -retro worked, and ls -l /etc/X11/Sessions gives me KDE-4 and Xsession. Again, there is no /etc/env.d/90xsession.
When I try to emerge nouveau-drm I get an error due to kernel configuration:
Code:
CONFIG_DRM: should not be set. But it is.
CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA: should not be set. But it is.

Maybe that's the problem? But then again xf86-video-nouveau emerged just fine.

equivalent, created by portage

leave nouveau-drm out for the moment

think the problem not having /etc/conf.d/xdm pointing to kde-4

I've done everything described above, and still nothing. My errors haven't changed a bit.
While compiling new kernel I got 3 warnings:

Yup, still the same error.

I guess so. When I try emerge -av kde-meta it only reinstalls one package (kde-meta).

temporary_user,

The problem you're experiencing sounds a lot like this one

Take a look at ~/.xsession-errors and review the aforementioned thread.

Changing /etc/conf.d/xdm to kdm worked!
Now, when i use startx GUI starts, to load, but freezes after a few seconds - after that I can't even change it to different terminal :(
Same thing happened with liverescuecd - when I tried to launch GUI it started successfully, but after a couple of seconds freezed and became unusable.
Where should I check for errors?

EDIT: Picture for clarification. At this point even mouse cannot be moved.

temporary_user,

Your problem is either in Xord or in your window manager.

As a test
Code:
emerge twm xterm xclock -1
and rename your ~/.xinitrc to say, ~/.xinitrc_broken.
Now try startx.

If it works, you get twm, with three xterms and a clock. This is a very simple window manager bot if it works it shows Xorg works underneth it too.
If it fails, the common item is Xorg. There may be something useful in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log which will still be there when you regain control.

If you have a second system and can log in with ssh (before or after the crash) dmesg after the crash may be useful too.
However, many crashes prevent logs being updated so the information we need may never make it to disk.
