hi, all.
I just finish install gentoo on my machine, using gnome desktop. I have a problem of switching the user account.
Under gnome-terminal ,I use command "su root" switch to root user, every thing goes fine, then ,I use command "su ***" go back to my normal account, it's fine too, but, when I use command "su root" again, it failed... .... the terminal stop when I finish input the password.
and I found something strange...
when I go back to my normal account ,the "PATH" variable changed,
before go to "root", the "PATH" is :"/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.5.3:/usr/games/bin"
back from "root", the "PATH" is:"/bin:/usr/bin"

hope help. :~(

i think it's better to use
Code:
su -
as a normal user to get root and then to leave the root-account with
Code:
exit
to return to "normal" user again. continuous "su-ing" from one account to the next creates unnecessary loops.
i tested what you stated with xfce and xterm and there were no problems but i suggest you test the "clean"
Code:
su -
...
exit
-method with your gnome-environment and see if the problem persists.
GOOD LUCK!
