I'm curious. Are those of you who use KDE 4.8.4 ~amd64 able to play Audio CDs in KsCD, Amarok, Dragon Player and Clementine?

In KDE 4.8.4 I can play Audio CDs fine with the following five players: Audacious; GNOME MPlayer; SMPlayer; VLC and Xine. Additionally, I am able to get Amarok to play an Audio CD when using the VLC Phonon backend but not when using the GStreamer backend.

In KDE 4.8.4 I cannot play Audio CDs with the following four players: Amarok using the GStreamer Phonon backend; Clementine; Dragon Player; KsCD.
Amarok, Clementine and Dragon Player play mp3 files fine, and Dragon Player plays videos fine too. So the problem with these four players is confined to Audio CDs. I have tried both the GStreamer Phonon backend and the VLC Phonon backend, and in neither case will Clementine, Dragon Player and KsCD play an Audio CD. It appears that these players and/or the Phonon backends are buggy.

Some additional information:

KsCD

Many moons ago KsCD could play Audio CDs on my laptop. I can't remember the last version of KDE 4 when it was possible, but my last recorded successful use of KsCD was in KDE 4.3.3.

A couple of days ago I added a comment to KDE Bug Report 302806 about my problem with KsCD 4.8.4. Actually, since I did an 'emerge uvDN world' today, the Konsole output from KsCD with the GStreamer Phonon backend is now limited to the following:

Code:
$ kscd
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
$

KsCD displays the track list (and, in the case of the GStreamer Phonon backend, the first track name scrolls across the KsCD window) but does not play the Audio CD.

Konsole output from KsCD with the VLC Phonon backend is as follows:

Code:
$ kscd
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

Amarok

With the GStreamer Phonon backend, Amarok does not even display the Audio CD. With the VLC Phonon backend Amarok can play Audio CDs, albeit with a few pauses initially and a lot of Konsole spew:

Code:
$ amarok
QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.

Clementine

Clementine just displays the pop-up message "Error while loading audio CD", whichever of the two Phonon backends are used. When launched in Konsole with the VLC Phonon backend the output is as follows:

Udev rules

I do have Udev rules set up in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules as shown below. I didn't enter these, so they must have been installed at some point during an 'emerge -uvDN world'.

Code:
# This file was automatically generated by the /lib64/udev/write_cd_rules
# program, run by the cd-aliases-generator.rules rules file.
#
# You can modify it, as long as you keep each rule on a single

I have tried both /dev/cdrom and /dev/sr0 in KDE's System Settings > Multimedia > Audio CDs | General | Specify CD Device. The problem remains with either.

Device Notifier

Device Notifier gives me the following choices when I insert an Audio CD in the optical drive:

Play Audio Cd with Amarok
Open with File Manager
Extract Digital Audio with K3b
Play Audio CD with KsCD
Copy with K3b
Open with VLC media player

If I click on 'Play Audio Cd with Amarok' or 'Play Audio CD with KsCD' then the relevant player is launched. Amarok does not even list the Audio CD. KsCD lists the Audio CD but does not play it.

I don't know how much of these issues are down to KDE itself, to the Phonon backends, to the applications themselves or to Gentoo's packaging. But playing Audio CDs is rather messy, that's for sure. Luckily, Audacious, GNOME Player, SMPlayer and Xine are completely reliable at playing Audio CDs. None of them are KDE packages, if I'm not mistaken.

I might not exactly qualify for answering as I run kde 4.8.3

However, I would tend to confirm that it is indeed an n+1 phonon-backend related problem.

A/ I cannot tell about phonon-vlc as it is definitely badly broken here (for a known and confirmed bug opened more than 2 years ago and still not closed)

B/ I can run phonon-gstreamer which is less broken but of pretty low quality and definitely not configurable

Under this backend, I can confirm that dragon-player wont play an audio cd.

C/ I still try to maintain my own (deprecated under Gentoo) phonon-xine backend package.
And this is the backend I definitely use reliably and successfully under all my kde realeases since v4.

Under this fine & great & incomparable but unsupported backend, I must say that :

Dragon-Player does play my audio cds very well.

So... maintain your own phonon-xine (I can give some help with this) or... ask on the phonon mailing list, I bet they will find some supported pulseaudio-based workaround that will make so they do not feel the need for actually correcting the actual bugs they get in their so-called supported backends...

I see similar issues(though I have not tried Amarok) and tend to use VLC directly to play CD's. I have googled on several occasions without any success.

It appears to be a KDE problem but the strange thing is that I am able to use the audiocd KIO slave in Konqueror to copy the music to my HD?

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=255310
- opened on kde bugzilla with 4.4.2 on october 2010 but far before on other bugzillas,
- a patch was commited with 0.6 in march 2012 apparently solving the problem in some cases, (It did not for me)
- BTW, on July 2012, phonon-vlc 0.6 is not in Gentoo-Portage yet. (I do not blame anybody for this)

I discussed on the phonon mailing list about this problem and a couple of others, they suggested I should install pulseaudio !

On a side note, I do not complain for whatever bugs in whatever package. I even do not complain for devs not taking care of the bugs affecting my system.
My only complain is about people who deprecate well working packages for being unsupported claiming they provide other functionally equivalent and supported packages when these are neither functionally equivalent nor actually supported.

Sorry Fitzcarraldo for going a bit off-topic.

That's the general train in which some upstream linux developers are going, considering the slew of packages like pulseaudio, kde-4.0 - 4.4, amarok-2* (several initial versions; stopped using it couple of years ago), kmail (till now), udisks and *kits, gnome (I don't use it, but going by the complaints about its releases till now), etc.

But it's not released yet. There is no source tarball in the usual places.

You are indeed right, it is not formally speaking a release that could enter Gentoo-Portage. That is why I had written that I was not blaming anybody for this.
Moreover, this "0.6" does not solve the problem(s) I have been experiencing on my system with this backend.
Additionally, since it was removed from portage's tree, I find the task of "maintaining" phonon-xine far less time consuming than debugging phonon-vlc...
So... I don't care.

aCOSwt, are you using a phonon-xine ebuild in a local overlay, or is it from a 3rd-party overlay? Could you give me details of the ebuild? I would like to try the phonon-xine backend, to see if I can get KsCD working. Not that it's essential, as I can play Audio CDs with those players I mentioned, but it would presumably show whether or not there is a bug in KsCD itself.

My local overlay...
I am... currently writing an howto in the documentation subforum, I expect being able to post it before 7 pm UTC+1.
