Hi all,
Each time I upgrade my system, it takes a very long time to deal with chromium (from 45 minutes to 2 hours).
I wonder what it is due to and how to fix that.
Code: |
antoine@Coffee:~$ emerge --info www-client/chromium

It's already 45 minutes since Compiling/Merging started and my CPUs are both 100% working.
Any idea ?
Thanks

Code: | # genlop chromium -t
* www-client/chromium
Tue Jun 19 13:14:09 2012 >>> www-client/chromium-19.0.1084.52
merge time: 20 minutes and 26 seconds. |
This is on a i7 with all systems full speed ahead. (4 cores + 4 HT cores)
So 45 minutes is probably about right. How much memory do you have? The build apparently needs 4Gb according to googlecode, and loads of swapspace, but I am sure that is overkill. |

I have 3GB RAM and 6GB swap but only 1.5GB RAM was used as I remember.
If this is normal, I struggle to understand why it takes so much time while gnome, for instance, only takes about half an hour.
Could it be a good idea to use a prebuilt package to gain time while upgrading ? |

I would.
Gnome is broken down into discrete parts, whereas chromium is a beast with everything packed into it. The actual source code is massive with chromium, almost 180Mb, which could account for some bloat.
To give you an idea here are some other packages on this system:
Code: | Wed Jul 4 03:02:24 2012 >>> www-client/firefox-13.0
merge time: 14 minutes and 36 seconds
Wed Jul 11 21:12:04 2012 >>> sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3
merge time: 8 minutes and 56 seconds.
Thu Jul 12 05:44:29 2012 >>> net-libs/webkit-gtk-1.6.3-r200
merge time: 10 minutes and 25 seconds. |
Webkit-gtk is the browser engine for gnome's browser Epiphany if I recall correctly, to put things in perspective. |

Thanks for your answers, I'll look for a prebuilt package. |

www-client/google-chrome is probably what you are after, but it's masked (possibly because it's not a gentoo built package). |

But chromium and google-chrome aren't the same thing, are they?
It would be great to have stable, beta and stable versions for chromium, as they are for chrome. Is it possible?
Best
PS or should I open a new thread? I didn't do it because sometimes a similar question has been marked as duplicated in favour of the current thread... _________________ Computers are like air conditioners, they stop working properly if you open Windows |
