@dsoumil, Welcome to Gentoo!
Start with the Handbook, which will guide you through the process of getting Gentoo Linux set up on your computer. Be warned: although your friend is not wrong, the road is rough for beginners. You'll get lots of help, though.
As far as learning programming, if you could share more of your goals, perhaps we could make some recommendations there as well.

Thanks @John R. Graham For the reply.
I have read the handbook and it is indeed very hard to comprehend.
So i was thinking something from the scratch that can bring me up.
I am currently doing my B.Sc ( computer science) from a college in INDIA.
we have c/c++ , oracle our syllabus right now.
I was thinking of approaching software's and programming as my career field because i have always had a good time with computers.
I am very good at computer stuff and software ( not making or writing them , just as a normal computer newbie is).
So i thought i am seriously consider my friends advice because he is a very good programmer and i acknowledge his recommendation to Gentoo.

There are several good Linux Tutorials. Linux Sea is Gentoo-centric, free, and was written by a Gentoo developer. See if that's close to what you're looking for. If you're looking for dead trees, I like Linux in a Nutshell.
