|
|
So, I finished emerging kde and everything. I tried to start it using startx but it didn't work. I realized that I was suppose to have an /etc/conf.d/xdm but I don't and when I tried to emerge xdm.
I got a
| Code: |
*Fetched failed for 'x11-apps/xconsole-1.0.4
*Failed to emerge X11-apps/xconsole-1.0.4
|
For consolekit, when i /etc/init.d/consolekit start, I get a consolekit failed to start.

You do not have to use xdm.
KDE can be started via startx (and should be able to start like that)
1/ While in you home directory, under console, could you please post the output of
This should look something like : | Code: | | exec ck-launch-session startkde |
2/ Can you additionally post the output of | Code: | | # ls -ails /etc/X11/sessions |

Replace yourname with your user name.
Then startx in the console _________________ Good luck

Hey Bill,
I think I am logged in as root. I don't have a username. Normally, It prompts me for login and I type in root and then type in my password. But i'll try it anyway. (the .xinitrc s not under root either, there's nothing there too) |

So at first, I suggest you have a look to the handbook from this point : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=11
And create a new user (your account) because it is strongly discouraged to use X under root. _________________ In theory there are no differences between theory and practice. In practice, there are.

aCOSwt, yeah, I'll create one tomorrow.
So, I tried Bill's thing and it didn't work because I have nothing under the home directory. I tried emerging
X11-apps/xinit
which I thought would work but didn't. Anyway, I'm still unable to start consolekit and still unable to emerge
x11-app/xconsole-4.x.x {i forgot what the other numbers were}
I was actually previously able to start consolekit but i think i did something weird to my make.conf and now, i'm unable to start it. As for the x11 stuff, I have no idea why things don't work. I tried starting it via startx but it returned some error about the x server not found or could not connect. |

All right so, now that you get a regular user, let's restart from scratch, assuming that what you are looking for is to start kde.
So, having logged under your regular account, just enter startx and tell us what happens.
If it is very short then just take notes and post it there, if a lot of text is scrolling on your screen, do not worry, you should be able to find it in /var/log/Xorg.0.log _________________ In theory there are no differences between theory and practice. In practice, there are.

startx for normal user returns:
| Code: |
xauth: timeout in locking authority file //.serverauth.2212
xauth: timeout in locking authority file //.Xauthority
xauth: timeout in locking authority file //.Xauthority
xauth: timeout in locking authority file //.Xauthority

/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 2: /usr/bin/X. No such file or directory
xinit: gvinig up
xinit: unable to connect to X server. Connection failed
xinit: server error
xinit: timeout in locking authority file //.Xauthority

startx for root:
| Code: |
xauth: file /root/.serverauth.2583 does not exist
xinit: giving up

A little clue here | Quote: | | /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 2: /usr/bin/X. No such file or directory |
To fix it | Code: | | emerge x11-base/xorg-server |
You should have installed this before kde _________________ Good luck

Bill,
It kinda didnt' work.
| Code: |
!!!Couldn't download 'mtdev-1.1.2.tar.bz2' Aborting
*Fetch failed for 'sys-libs/mtdev-1.1.2/temp/build.log
*'/var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/mtdev-1.1.2/temp/build.log
>>>Failed to emerge sys-libs/mtdev-1.1.2
*Fetch failed for 'sys-libs/mtdev-1.1.2, Log file
|
I feel like i might have skipped a step. The KDE instructions didn't mention anything about emerging x11-base/xorg-server |

It worked for me
If you can | Code: | | ping -c3 google.com |
then
| Code: | | ebuild $(equery w sys-libs/mtdev) fetch |
else there's some other problem _________________ Good luck

| I can ping google but can't do the ebuild thing. Was I suppose to configure my kernel for xorg or something? I remeber briefly reading a tutorial that mention configuring the kernel for xorg or something like that. |

Actually, ping -c google.com returns a,
| Code: | | bad number of packets to transfer |
the ebuild thing doesn't work, here's the error messages.
regular user
| Code: |
No write access to '/usr/portage/disfiles'
file mtdev-1.1.2.tar.bz2 isn't fetched but unable to get it
|
rootuser
| Code: |
!Couldn't download mtdev-1.1.2.tar.bz2
|
Was I suppose to do something before going on to the kde tutorial? I feel like I might have missed something |

You mean this error
| Code: | bill@gentoo-gateway ~ $ ping -c google.com
ping: bad number of packets to transmit.
|
You gotta pay attention | Code: | | ping -c3 google.com | see the number '3'
| Quote: | | No write access to '/usr/portage/disfiles' |
Do it as root then your root password if you login as user _________________ Good luck

| oh, my bad. And I tried it as root too. It says that it can't download. I'm in mainland china currently. Is it possible that this could have been blocked? (I don't think so though) |

Check the list of mirrors. I believe there are mirrors in mainland China. You may want to try using those mirrors.
Also, if you download something as a user download it to your home directory then us cp or mv as root to copy or move the file to /usr/portage/disfiles. Its best to deal with only one problem at a time if you can. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order. |

| I don't think its the mirrors. I was able to emerge kde-meta with my current mirrors and it was fine. I'm not able to emerge anything x11 related. |

I tried it and it didn't work. Still failed to download.
------------------Also, this is really dumb, but when I'm in my normal user account, when i su,
the root password is not my root password. When I enter in my root password for su, it says permission denied.--------------- |

You're going to have to chroot to the gentoo installation with systemrescuecd or any live media that starts you out with root privileges and set the root password

The root password is the root password; There's only one. Next time try su root
As far as why you can't download - if the ping worked - I have no clue Chinese firewall _________________ Good luck

ok well, at least its not a kernel problem or anything But that's weird, why would they block that?? I'll try it once i get back to hong kong. the firewall does not apply there. Actually, do you think that I could try proxying through the firewall? I know that the firewall works kinda like web filters at school/work. You can just proxy/VPN through em. |
