Hi,

I'm trying to install something depending on boost on my server. But boost fails to build. It builds fine on my pc (both 64 bit) so I guess it's some depency problem (or something else depending on the ebuild).
Since I don't realy have a clue why it fails here are the logs:

buildlog: http://pastebin.com/brUQjtSJ

and emerge --info:
Code:

The compiler is dying. This can often be caused by insufficient memory. How much RAM+swap do you have on each machine? Why do you want to build the package again on the server if you already built it for the same architecture on your desktop?

Because I'm using gentoo probably? My pc is using the a unstable gcc compiler and the core i7 avx arch flag - which probably wouldn't work on that server.
And since the server is not located at my place I would need to upload all those compiled files. And after all: why do you use gentoo if you do not want to compile things someone else already compiled?

My server got 1GB of RAM. Actually, as I realised with my notebook, it is possible to force an amount of memory to compile a package (check out libreoffice) so if 1GB ram (and 1 gb ram in addition) is not enough, that should maybe be forced to be available.

Gentoo is not about pointlessly recompiling code. Gentoo provides extensive opportunities for customization. Your first post did not indicate that there were material differences between the two machines. Indeed, your assumption of a dependency error could be read to mean that you already ruled out all other differences. Using different compiler versions is a major difference.

Compiling Boost is very memory intensive. A server with 1GB of RAM is quite small these days. You should upgrade it if you want to keep using large modern packages.

My notebook got 1GB ram (and therefore needed a IKNOWWHATIAMDOING for libreoffice) and boost never had a problem there.
1GB of ram actually is way more then I need for daily use, just for compiling is a waste of money.

I increased the swap space with an swap file now and it seems to work. So I'm sorry for not believing you, you were right.
Anyways I think those packages should force the ram. Libreoffice forced 1280 MB of ram, I had no swap space on my notebook and it complained about my ram - I simply used IKNOWWHATIAMDOING and it ran without problems.

Anyways I think I'm through with it thanks for your help.

The memory requirements for Boost are driven by its use of advanced C++ features, so the compiler's memory usage for those features is highly relevant. The gcc developers tend to improve the compiler in a variety of ways, including making newer versions more memory efficient at parsing and optimizing complex constructs. For example, the release notes for gcc 4.6 note that they reorganized the data for better memory usage and cache locality, so gcc 4.6 and later may show substantially more favorable memory footprints when working with certain units. The notes specifically state that units which use inlining extensively will benefit. Parts of Boost use inlining extensively.
