Headline would be more accurate as "loses order due to lack of MIPS support."

NVIDIA Loses Huge GPU Order Due To Linux Blob
Quote:
The Chinese, who also developed the Loongson MIPS CPU, were looking to order at least ten million graphics processors. The problem is that the GeForce / Quadro driver from NVIDIA is only available for Linux x86 and x86_64 architectures, not MIPS or even ARM (only the Tegra driver is for ARMv7). NVIDIA refused to release the source-code to their high-performance feature-complete cross-platform driver to the Chinese, and it would cost them millions of dollars to port the code-base, so they went to AMD for their GPU order.

Given the trustworthiness of the Chinese, I think it seems like a good demonstration of why they would choose to not release the source, even under NDA.

The Chinese just want to copy it. Their fastest supercomputers are comprised of NVIDIA GPUs (with Longsoon CPUs thrown in so they can save face and claim that it's a Chinese computer).

Exactly. That's why I don't think it is a genuine loss.

Pfffft. NVIDIA's not going bankrupt anytime soon. It's AMD who is having financial issues.

Technically, it could be chalked up to a gain in the long run.

Just from my circle of friends, we all (but 1) use nVidia, and update our cards for our gaming boxes close to yearly. So from my small circle alone nVidia is making thousands. I am not a beautiful and unique snowflake.

nvidia is as good as dead.

money is not made with the high end gaming cards - those actually are more expensive to made then they can be sold for (especially with nvidia's broken designs). Money is earned with the low and middle class cards.

Those areas are not only not dominated by nvidia, those areas are dying fast with intel's and amd's gpu/cpu combos.

Nvidia can not fight back. They are out of the chipset business, they will lose their marketshare in the low and middle class sector. So what is left? Tegra? Running hot and late?

For sourcecode: amd and intel are able and willing to release documentation and code - and it did not hurt them in the past.

Nvidia is ruled by a bunch of fuckheads.

AMD would probably be prevented from buying them, Intel as well. I predict Via, maybe Dell.

Yeah, hilarious. Seems like an opportunity to engage those from the company who want to make a difference.

lol will be those who ignore the offer due to zealotry induced blindness.

The chinese: NVIDIA, we want to buy millions of your GPU's.
NVIDIA: Great, here it is.
The chinese: oh, we forgot to mention, but you'll have to give us the code.
NVIDIA: fuck you, we quit.

basically NVIDIA refused to sell their goods to the chinese, it's their own decision and not like they've been kicked out of the race.

I'm not supercomputer expert but why would a supercomputer have a load of GPUs let alone one?

At least they can make good Linux drivers. I'll take that over open sourced code any day.

I can take one of my FPGA's at work which is clocked at 24MHz and I can write some logic for it such it would run circles around a quad core i7 at 3GHz.
Problem is it would do that one task fucking amazingly and nothing else.

a GPU is a fucktonne of very small specialist cores which do a specific job. There are thousands of these in parallel. THUS for a specifically crafted job pushed to a GPU it will complete it in a time orders of magnitudes faster that the universal state machine which is also known as your CPU.
Spend a bit of time crafting the jobs to send to the GPU and bam :)

i think its only a matter of time until the Chinese burn themselves out like the USSR did trying to keep up with the west.

Their problem is different. Their problem is going to be trying to keep 1.5 billion people happy.
