john-doe,
Your kernel cannot mount the root filesystem as the filesystem driver is missing from the kernel.
Boot your old kernel, get into and use the search function (press /) then enter ext4
Ext4 must be set to <*>
Fix that then rebuild and rinstall your kernel.
Since you are now a part of the gentoo community, please file a bug at bugs.gentoo.org about the documenation.
That will bring it to the document teams attention. If you have the time and skill, please post a patch with the bug that will fix it. _________________ Regards,

Hi,
I have an old AMD K7 based machine with USB 1.1 ports. And a USB keyboard with extra USB ports on it.
Here is the situation:
I was doing a major rewamp of it and booted the machine using knoppix boot-cd. I noticed that my USB key, works when I plug it into the port on the keyboard.
Normally (when using my own kernel) I have to plug it into the port on the machine, otherwise it complains of not enough power (in dmesg).
I assume there is something in the knoppix kernel config that makes enough power available on this usb port on the keyboard. Any idea what it is? There are some power related settings in the usb section, but I don't know what sort of values to use and if there are other less obvious settings I need.

monsm,
I suspect that Knoppix ignores the overcurrent condition. _________________ Regards,

john-doe,
Using the information you provided, pappy has made you a kernel. However, instead of sending you a 100Mb file, he has provided the only part that is unique to you. Thats the .config file. Its only around 40kB, which is mutch more user friendly.
Pappy has made the .config for the kernel you already have the sources for, so you only need to save your old .config file, clean out all the rubbish (which is what mrproper does) and put pappys .config file into your clean sources.
At this point, you have a properly configured kernel for your system
builds the kernel and its modules
| Code: | | make modules_install | puts the modules into the proper place in /lib/modules/
The final steps for you are to mount /boot, if you have a boot partition and to copy the kernel bzImage file to boot. _________________ Regards,

When I say, "compile as is," I mean don't modify it using make menuconfig, or any other kernel reconfiguration program.
In order to troubleshoot properly, I need to be sure that what I sent you as a .config file is what you are compiling by the use of make. I put that part in because I have had other people who did reconfigure the .config, and by doing so, introduced errors that wouldn't have happened had the .config been compiled as is.
Once I can verify that the .config has compiled properly, ie., the intended drivers and options were compiled in, and that the computer is working properly thereafter, through the viewing of /var/log/dmesg, you can then make any needed modifications to suit your machine. If the .config is modified before it is compiled, I can't assure proper operation.
Cheers,
Pappy _________________ SITE LIST:

I'm trying to configure a gentoo linux-3.2.1-gentoo-r2 kernel to run as a guest os under vmware on a gentoo 2.6.37-gentoo-r4 host machine. I did something similar a few years ago: I ran reed hat RHEL5.2 under vmware hosted under win-xp, but I did not build a red hat kernel; I just used the pre-built bloatmaster kernel provided by the fine folks at redhat. :-\
Now I am ready to build my kernel, and when I do the lspci -n and paste into the web page to see what drivers I need, I get something I don't understand. What I see is:

Moriah,
vmware emulates a subset of hardware. Mostly obsolete stuff.

80867113 Yes Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI i2c-piix4 v2.6.25-

8086100f Yes Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) e1000 v2.6.25-
12741371 Yes Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] snd-ens1371 v2.6.25-
15ad0770 VMware USB2 EHCI Controller |
You only need to concern yourself with the list above.
Since VMware seems to have aquired PCIe support too, you should enable that along with PCI under busses.
Is that enough of a hint? _________________ Regards,

Thanks, Neddy! Somehow, I just *KNEW* that you would be the one to respond to my plea for help.
Yes, and since I do not care about sound or usb for this vm, then all I need is the generic disk, video, and ethernet, and I should be all set!
I'll post how it goes. _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

Moriah,
Its not generic. Its very old Intel, except the e1000, network card and the PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI.
The SCSI there bits many users in the bum as its not under SCSI in the Kernel. Look out for Fusion MPT all on its own menu.
From memory, its just under the SCSI menu. _________________ Regards,
