Hello,

I am new to Gentoo. So far, I solved my problems with the handbook, forum and google.
But I found nothing for the following problem. Maybe I used wrong keywords.

I would like to install e.g. cryptsetup to my computer twice:
first, with everything set to default (USE, ROOT),
second, with special USE and special directory:
USE="... static" and ROOT=/initram/
Or, similar questions with firefox:
first install is the default with all the restrictions
(mprotect, -jit, and so on),
second one is the extended one with all the extras
(-mprotect, jit etc to /opt/firefox)

Is there a simple way to do this with emerge?

Thanks,
Bela

out of the box nope, but you can modify emerge to install it to different locations or maybe modify the ebuild so it will support slots. do notice that the latter needs different versions and might seriously break your system.

question is why do you need two instances of the same package?

Thanks for your reply.
So there is no easy way to do this.

Two instances: I am trying Gentoo Hardened with Pax and Grsecurity,
and as far as I understand, Pax and grsec restrictions are file based.
And I would like to make a "useable" Hardened Desktop...
So for example, there would be two firefox binary,
the default one in /usr/bin with all the restrictions (mprotect, and so on,
so no flash, js, and so on), and a special one, with relaxed restrictions
(no mprotect; flash, js enabled) but not accessible for everyone
(file permissions).

And I also wanted that this two instances setup should be
as easy to manage, upgrade, ...

Regards,
B.

Good question.
After some reading, I found that chroot is the right way
what I want to do, not the one I asked above.
So problem is solved.
