|
|
Hello,
I have used MythTV for years on amd64. Today I have noticed that there is no longer a stable build in portage. I currently have 0.23.1_p27077 installed, but the only version now available is 0.24.1_p20110524 which is marked as ~amd64. What happens if a revdep-rebuild decides that I need to re-build MythTV? My only choice would be to accept the ~amd64 version via package.keywords, but since MythTV is exposed to 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' I am extremely reluctant to run anything other than the most stable version I can find. Can someone please explain to me the logic behind removing the stable 0.23 version before there is a stable 0.24 version?
Thanks |

Lack of ebuild maintenance, methinks.
MythTV 0.25.1 is stable.
0.26 is unstable.
Use some overlay to get 0.25.
Upgrade from 0.23 to 0.25 may not succeed. Make sure you have a good backup of your MySQL database and a way to restore you current version of MythTV before attempting an upgrade.
Edit: If you are using analog you just may want to stick with 0.23. Since 0.24 analog has been nothing but nightmare for me. According to some sarcastic comments on mythtv-users mailing list "nobody knows how this code works any more". _________________ Please learn how to denote units correctly! |

I've been running 0.24 from the upstream ebuilds (not really an overlay, somewhat overlay-like) for some time, now. I didn't have analog problems, but perhaps that's because it simply "inherited" my existing analog setup. Then at some point Comcast eliminated analog, so that's all a thing of the past, for me. Instead of my twin hvr-1600's I'm now using an HDHR-Prime + a CableCard.
About a month back that quit working so well. Most, but not all of my shows end up being badly cut - not the end, but pieces throughout. I haven't had time to debug the problem yet, and there are conflicting symptoms. For instance, I've done experiments to verify that it's not one specific tuner that's the problem - it's either all of the tuners, or some other problem entirely. This past weekend I took steps to improve my signal, with no apparent change. There may also be some evidence that the recording is first made correctly, then chopped up after the fact, but I have nothing firm on that one.
I need to put some serious time in on this one, with deliberate steps and experimentation. I just haven't had the time. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

Like many I've been using the Gentoo github overlay starting with 0.24:
https://github.com/MythTV/packaging/tree/master/Gentoo
That's worked out well so far. However one really strange thing has happened there that I don't understand...I posted this question to the mythtv users mailing list and got no responses:
The 0.25 ebuilds on that overlay are all still marked as unstable. I'm still using 0.24.2 and that's fine with me. However, for some reason, the 0.24.2 mythweb ebuild was removed from the overlay, and the 0.25 mythweb marked as stable. So the way it is right now (and the way it's been for weeks) is broken.
The only reason I still even have a mythweb ebuild is that I have a second overlay I used to make a few customizations to mythweb, but the github ebuild I copied that from is no more....yet it seems as though I'm the only one whose even noticed...really really strange.

I was having problems with the mythweb-0.24.2, when trying to run "emerge -p --depclean". They had a really odd dependency for php, and it prevented depclean from running. Since it looked as if it was meant to handle several different php setups, I simplified it to cover my setup only. Now depclean runs OK.
But because I edited the ebuild, it doesn't get updated from github. Now that I see your post, I guess that's a good thing. The frustrating thing to me is that those 0.25 ebuilds on github are quite stale. Last I saw, they weren't yet at the level that was called "0.25 release". I've also seen a lot of problems running LiveTV with 0.25 - but then I guess I don't really use that feature, anyway. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

As to why the github ebuilds are "stale", you can read here: http://code.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/10792

Yea, the whole thing confuses me. I'm glad I'm not in a hurry for 0.25. I still don't see the rational for going stable with just mythweb for 0.25 and removing the 0.24.2 ebuild. Whatever it was that was broken is certainly a lot more broken the way it is.
Mythweb 0.24.2 as it was worked perfectly for me, and I had no problems with depclean...possibly because I have a pretty standard install with only php 5.3 installed. I'm glad I have my own custom copy of that ebuild.
