Hey guys
i just noticed this interesting project over in the arch forums
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121162
I tried it out and its extremely solid. all apps work and it acts just like the old gnome, im wondering if theres a similiar project or ebuild/gentoo repo or overlay for MATE DE
Or if you guys offer a way to use gnome 2 latest version just before gnome 3. without forceful updates to gnome 3 ( by forceful. i mean most software updating to the use of gtk3 and mutter etc. and themes etc ) |

Nice description, hehe; non-intuitive, I like that.
Gnome3 also got me to move to KDE and no-desktop-environment setups. I guess I'll keep one eye on this, since I used Gnome2 + xmonad for a long time. I'm guessing, but I think the gentoo desktop environment people are so busy with making existing goals work, that MATE would only get supported in an overlay by some people who use it and love it. The Fedora version might be easier to support since there's some rpm ebuild tools already. |

Well i cant remember the name of the fedora project but i do remember reading about it. theres a big difference in the fedora one against MATE. the fedora version is looking to actually make the environement 100% compatable with gtk 3 apps. and gnome 3 software. mate doesnt, it uses its own set of ported software. so that is one big downfall for mate |

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software. Not in Portage so it fits better here.

With Gnome 3 now unmasked in Portage, it'd be nice to get MATE installed in Gentoo. |

This isn't written in stone or anything, but around when GNOME2 is first last-rited, if one does not exist already, I will be starting a mate overlay. I do not think GNOME3 (even with Cinnamon) will EVER be a suitable replacement for GNOME2. |

*** BUMP again ****
Mate-desktop 1.2 is out....ubuntu and fedora have it.
Any progress for Gentoo, or am I going to have to install it myself from source?
Yes, I dislike Gnome 3 and Gnome 3 + cinnamon....it doesn't do or have the feel that I want.
Thanks. |

We (or I guess I should say primarily Joost Ruis) have been adding Mate ebuilds to the Sabayon overlay.
https://git.sabayon.org/overlays/for-gentoo.git/
There's a meta ebuild in mate-base/mate. |

It is anticipated that Gnome will drop support for Gnome2 soon (if they haven't effectively done so already).
However, as you note, Gnome2 is currently the stable Gnome in the portage tree. |

You can't - because it's not there.
MATE has been moved to mate-overlay.
You can use layman for easy overlay handling.
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/overlays/userguide.xml
Once the overlay is added, You can install it like any other package. |
