Hi!
When I hover the mouse over a file in dolphin, the cursor is only changing to busy, no preview or additional info is shown. I know there was a package for that, but cannot find the name any more. Does anyone know what package that is? It used to show mp3-info or document related stuff...

Is Settings -> General -> Show Tooltips disabled?

Nono, that's active. I remember it is an extra package providing a lot of usful extra-info for some file types. I accidentially uninstalled it a long time ago and can't remember the name

The Tooltips Feature only works when nepomuk is installed and started.
Maybe you also have to set "semantic-desktop" USE-Flag first.

Interesting. I tested it on a laptop with USE="-semantic-desktop" and it showed the behaviour the OP described (busy-cursor and no tooltip). Then I disabled nepomuk on my workstation - and I do get Tooltips in dolphin. It does not show special Metadata, but general data such as Mime Type, last edited and size.
So I think this is a bug. -semantic-desktop should have a working tooltip.

If I have time this evening, I will have a look at it.

Hmm, I have set -semantic-desktop, true. I really have no idea when I last used that feature, it has been more than a year for sure. Convinient was that it for example showed bitrate and length info for mp3 files. I think it was something like kde-multimedia-addons or the likes... Are you people sure that this functionality has been migrated into the indexing services? If so, I will happily skip :)

Don't quote me on this, because I am not sure at all. But I foggily remember that feature from the kde 3.x days. And I remember, just like you, installing a package to get that.

If I am right and my memory serves (that would be much coincidence though  ), this was much longer than one year ago (as I said, it was in kde 3.x). Anyway, what's relevant for this thread is that all this stuff have moved into the semantic desktop tagging mechanism (a.k.a. nepomuk). I have no idea if the old solution from the 3.x days was ever ported to 4.x. While technically possible, for most people it wouldn't make much sense, except for those of us who will never use that nepomuk monstrosity.

Lol, indeed... Maybe my memory serves me wrong too and this has been much more than a year... Time flies from a certain age  And Nepomuk will *never* make it on my machine, been there, done that, facepalm...
EDIT: I wonder if staring at the compiler-output has something to do with this memory losses? Hmmm :)

Just in case, did you try installing the dolphin plugins package? Or maybe the multimedia kioslaves...?

I found out, that KIO::PreviewJob neither emits failed() nor gotPreview(), when kdelibs are built with -semantic-desktop, resulting in keeping Cursor in dolphin spinning. So probably a bug in kdelibs. I will see, if I can find the source.

BTW.: Is your problem the missing ToolTip, or do you really want all those extra-infos like length, bitrate, ... of the videos? Because those are not shown, if nepomuk is installed but turned off.

Multimedia-kioslaves are installed, no change with dolphin plugins... Cursor is still idling.
I don't care for video files, but that plugin also gave preview for images and some useful stuff for mp3s.
Not so important, I have this issue for ages and just overcame my lazyness to ask :)

Hehehe! How could I forget that? It even embeds tightly into KDE thanks to Konsole... Problem solved :)

Hi, I reported this bug some time ago: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401183 and it was closed as WORKSFORME. Since we seem to have a general idea for the source of the bug (-semantic-desktop) I'll try reopening it.

EDIT: found an upstream bug report: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=270842
