LONDON—The confusion over Greece's status in the euro zone became even thicker Saturday, as the German magazine Der Spiegel reported that Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker had threatened Greece with effective expulsion from Europe's currency union at a meeting Monday.
Juncker, who also chairs the regular meetings of euro-zone finance ministers, reportedly told Greek finance minister Filippos Sachinidis that most of his counterparts in the currency union were in favor of Greece leaving it, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday.
"If we were to hold a secret vote now about Greece staying in the euro zone, then there would be an overwhelming majority against," Juncker reportedly warned Sachinidis.
It also reported that Juncker said Greece's next elections on June 17 were its "last chance" to stay in the euro zone, saying that if the elections didn't produce a government that would abide by the conditions of the country's bail-out program "then it's over."
Spiegel's report is almost diametrically at odds with the comments Juncker made in a press conference after the Monday meeting.
At the time, Juncker had called talk of Greece leaving the euro zone "nonsense, propaganda" and had warned fellow finance ministers against hectoring Greece.
Summing up the discussions, Juncker had said that: "The exit of Greece from the euro zone was not the subject of our discussions," and that "absolutely no-one has argued for that position."
Spiegel's report is the latest twist in an increasingly bizarre series of claims and counter-claims by European officials on the possibility of Greece leaving the euro zone.
In an interview Friday, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht had told the newspaper De Standaard that: "The commission and the European Central Bank were "working on emergency scenarios if Greece does not make it."
Soon after, Economic and Financial Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn had denied De Gucht's comments, stressing that he, not De Gucht, was responsible for the issue at the commission.
"We are not working on the scenario of a Greek exit," Rehn said, although he pointedly declined to answer when asked if he believed Greece would stay in the union.
To make the confusion complete, Spiegel also said that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had mooted the possibility of Greece holding a referendum on staying in the euro zone simultaneously with the elections.
This revelation comes a day after angry exchanges between Athens and Berlin, when Greek interim Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikrammenos claimed that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had made the same suggestion to President Karolos Papoulias--a claim flatly contradicted by a spokeswoman for the German government.
Spokesmen for Juncker and Schaeuble said they were unable to confirm the report. |

I do not personally worry.
French-Socialism has as much to do with Socialism as Emerson with Philosophy, Bourbon with a Scottish Single Malt, Paris (Illinois) with Paris (Seine), Canada-Dry with alcohol, and accidentally BK's sarcasms with Aesthetic. _________________ In theory there are no differences between theory and practice. I additionally think that you should get up to date words for speaking of this.
I have always been interested in neologisms...
All this mess triggered the invention of a new one : GREXIT !
