Just a minor thing: I doubt static-libs were really required.

As for lablgtk, unsetting gnome and gnomecanvas on it should be enough.
Looking at the ebuilds, it seems, that once you fix lablgtk, libgweather problem should go away.

okay, I ripped out dev-ml/lablgtk-2.14.2 with no trouble. When I try and rip out dev-libs/libgweather-2.90.1, I get the following:
Code:

# emerge -C dev-libs/libgweather-2.90.1
 * This action can remove important packages! In order to be safer, use
 * `emerge -pv --depclean <atom>` to check for reverse dependencies before
 * removing packages.

--- Couldn't find '=dev-libs/libgweather-2.90.1' to unmerge.

>>> No packages selected for removal by unmerge

Trying 'emerge -uDNvp' I get:
Code:

# emerge -uDNvp world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

gnome-base/gnome-panel:0

(gnome-base/gnome-panel-2.32.1-r3::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    >=gnome-base/gnome-panel-2.32[bonobo] required by (dev-ml/lablgtk-2.14.2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- media-libs/amd64codecs-20071007::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Steve Dibb <beandog@gentoo.org> (05 Nov 2008)
# Mask realplayer codecs for security bug 245662
# http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-713051.html

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

This is confusing to me. I ripped out lablgtk, no problem, it claims that libgweather isn't there, yet it still appears to be pulling both in. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Todd

Yes, read my previous post again - due to some dep, lablgtk is pulled in again, so unset gnome on it.

Sorry about that, I missed your post last night! That has worked, we're off and running, I will let everyone know after all the packages have been compiled.

Thanks

 * revdep-rebuild failed to emerge all packages.
 * you have the following choices:
 * - If emerge failed during the build, fix the problems and re-run revdep-rebuild.
 * - Use /etc/portage/package.keywords to unmask a newer version of the package.
 *   (and remove 5_order.rr to be evaluated again)
 * - Modify the above emerge command and run it manually.
 * - Compile or unmerge unsatisfied packages manually,
 *   remove temporary files, and try again.
 *   (you can edit package/ebuild list first)
 * To remove temporary files, please run:
 * rm /var/cache/revdep-rebuild/*.rr

Not sure what to set to get around this problem, I thought since I fixed the use flags and got rid of these errors during emerge that all would be well. lol

Thanks

Todd

I did enter:
Code:
emerge --depclean -p

And have quite an extensive list, not sure if this may be the correct route

For one, don't ever use depclean without a lot of experience.
Unmerge gnome-extra/deskbar-applet and net-analyzer/gnome-netstatus - seems those are applets that died with Gnome 2.
Recheck revdep-rebuild afterwards.

todd93,

Post the list and we will look it over for you.

Your problem now it that you hav esome fragments of gnome2 left and they are broken, so revdep-rebuild wants to fix them and can't because gnome3 is installed.

...PS.: dev-python/gnome-applets-python should most likely be removed too.

I understand you need a lot of experience for this, that's why I am very cautious! Here is the output as far back as it shows in the terminal, but it did cut off some of the beginning:

Okay, removed all of that, after dealing with the inkscape issue, revdep-rebuild completed successfully, I assume I am now ready to reboot and enter gnome 3?

Okay, something is now dreadfully wrong. I got anxious, rebooted and now nothing really works. It's not loading eth.1, or anything. A lot of errors while booting, went by so fast I'm not sure what they all are. If I can get eth1 to work, I can ssh in and fix it all, so I guess that's the first step.

When I enter '/etc/init.d/net.eth1 start' I get the following:
Code:

*Your system still has /etc/conf.d/rc
*Please migrate to the appropriate settings in /etc/rc.conf
*and delete /etc/conf.d/rc
*Bringing up interface eth1
*     ERROR: interface eth1 does not exist
*     Ensure that you have loaded the correct kernel module for your hardware
*ERROR:  net.eth1 failed to start

Not sure what the problem is here, didn't expect this. I can verify that the kernel module settings are all accurate, I did double check immediately upon experiencing this error!

All help now will be EXTREMELY appreciated!

Thanks!

Well, the migration is described here - should be mostly straightforward.
On that note: openrc migration is a rather old topic...
As for that depclean list, it's bit too long to fully parse, but:
- if you use vlc, you should add it to your world file ('--no-replace' option should suffice)
- if you no longer have any apps using them, you should be able to safely ('-c') remove Gnome 2 python components (i.e. dev-python/libbonobo-python, dev-python/pyorbit, dev-python/libgnome-python)
- liboil is most likely a former, no longer used dep of pulseaudio
- gnome-extra/gtkhtml is most likely either a former dep of devhelp or epiphany (both use webkit now)
As for the net problem, check if the interface didn't get renamed (see 'ip addr').

I did miss a few of these. That's what happens when you get in a rush, I'm learning a hard lesson now!

Thanks

Thanks for the input here, I did find a quote on the migration guide:
Quote:

It is critical that you run dispatch-conf and ensure your /etc is up to date before rebooting. Failure to do so will result in an unbootable system and will require the use of the Gentoo LiveCD to perform the steps below to repair your system.

So, that's what I have. An unbootable system, had I paid better attention, this could've been avoided. So I guess it's time to get the livecd out and fix it!

Thanks

Hi,

Don't know if you solved your problem. I ran into the same problem here, but it wasn't to hard to solve using the livecd:
First emerge openrc and followed the steps described in the guide ( from my chrooted env).
This restored all my simlinks in the default runlevel.

After this, reemerge udev and then pciutils etc. There where some "file collision problems" as described elsewhere, but (re)moving the colliding files solved it for me.

Now my system is working again,

Lex.

Hi, Lex, thanks for that bit of info! The truth is that due to work schedules I have not had time to try it yet. I do appreciate the info, I am sure I will find it very helpful, I plan on working on it this weekend when I have a little more time. I will let everyone here know how it worked out.

Thanks again, this is very helpful information!

Okay, now I'm very confused. The migration guide seemed to be somewhat helpful, however, udev will not start because it complains of CONFIG_DEVTMPFS not being set in the kernel when it is. I'm not sure what the problem is because the messages are scrolling way too fast during the boot process. I did use the migration guide, but don't know what to do from here.

Thanks

Hi,

Although I had a working system after upgrading openRC (and could just start and use Gnome3, etc) , I now managed to break my system in a similar way as described by you.

I recompiled the kernel to make sure it includes DEVTMPFS but I also get those errors during boot.
The system can boot in a "read-only" environment if I disable xdm from default runlevel, without network etc., and can only do something useful using chroot.
( if the system autostarts xdm/gnome, it hangs with the pointer waiting and no reaction from mouse or keyboard, like cntr-alt-f1).

I haven't got a clue what went wrong, after the openRC-upgrade "worked" I upgraded more files including xorg-server, Gnome etc, and this broke the system...

Alex.

Hi, Lex, thanks for that bit of info! The truth is that due to work schedules I have not had time to try it yet. I do appreciate the info, I am sure I will find it very helpful, I plan on working on it this weekend when I have a little more time. I will let everyone here know how it worked out.
Todd

Sorry Todd, I think I was happy a bit too early myself... Apparently, solving only part of the problems with openRC at that point....

Note to self : Be careful what keywords (~x86 / ~amd64) to introduce!

Hi todd,

I managed to get my system in the old configuration where I can boot the system and log in ( no gnome yet, but this might have to do with other issues).
Basically, I went back to udev-171-r6 . This meant removing and reemergin lots of other packages from a chrooted environment, but it seems to work now.

One important thin I discovered about how I messed up my system : I (accidentally, probably in a hurry, not paying attention :-) ) introduced ~x86 as an accepted keyword for some packages, while my system is amd64 so I needed ~amd64 .
Although my system is not completely back to normal yet , repairing this seems to make the system work much better as it should.
I guess this played a major role in the problems and conflicts between packages.

What keywords do you use?
(I was wondering, since before I try an upgrade to udev-182 again I would like to have some feeling about what went wrong...)

Thanks

Hi Todd,

I discovered that my keyword-mix-up ( ~x86 vs ~amd64) caused a new version of GCC to be used during my upgrade;
By doing so I ended up with ( next to the udev-problems) other problems.
I now think this wrong gcc-version caused my troubles.

Going back to old gcc (gcc-4.5.3-r2) solves the problems ( still with old udev however).

What gcc-version do you use?
Code:
gcc-config -l

Alex, I am so very sorry that I had not replied to you, I hope you can understand that shortly after I started having this problem, my dad had to undergo some medical procedures and I have been unable to revisit this issue until now. Don't worry, all is well now with him, as he is recovering very well and I can now resume my work here. I have chrooted into my environment and am sshing in to do this work from a debian laptop. Funny you should mention gcc, as I entered: gcc-config -l and I get the following:

Code:

# gcc-config -l
 [1] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.4.5 *
 [2] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.5.3
 [3] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.6.3

Please forgive my ignorance in dealing with these problems, but I do not know how to choose a different gcc. Also, since it has been so long since I had messed with it, I decided to emerge --sync and emerge -uDNv world, and the following packages fail:

Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Now I'm not so worried about the firefox, and thunderbird packages, but was wondering if anything is standing out that could be problematic for me and the issues I am having?

I really do appreciate any and all help I receive here, and want to thank everyone in advance.
