This can actually make me wanna play it. I love Diablo 1 for its atmosphere (even now graphics don't bother me), but when I played Diablo 2 I got bored after a few hours because all I saw were green areas, nice houses and a few shallow caves :?

That was just Act I. You should give the game another go. Diablo II is good.

But yeah, D3 is pretty gloomy, visually speaking, from what I have played of it (which is not all of Act I).

When you get near the end of Act 1 of D3, it's dark.

What class are you playing nomilieu?

Im trying to stay clear from D3, cos I can see myself getting into it and going for that inferno playtrough. Could be useful to catch some sunshine instead, vitamine D and all that :)

I played a witch doctor until I hit level 10, and then made a HC Wizard.
My roommate has been playing both a Monk and a DH, but I have yet to see the Barb in action.

Buhu, you would need the binary driver, patch wine etc. where is that Gold rating? :x
I wait until the game is ~2 years old... or next month or so (rip out the card and put nvidia back in).

Well, I think that beta was more for testing server capacities. As far as I know, there was no Templar follower in the beta, which only had Act I available.
I was surprised in a positive way by the gloominess of DIII. The atmosphere, at least of act I is great. Wouldn't actually call it better than DI, but certainly beats DII.

Expect to not get through act 3 in HC. I'm going to go through all the difficulties in softcore just so I know what to expect in HC. I've died four times, once randomly by a Palestinian demon (suicide bomber), twice fighting Azmodan, and once fighting the first mini boss of act 4.

Currently still in act 4, with Mbwun.

I played enough Nintendo growing up that I'm not afraid of Game Over.
It's nice to have warning though, that I'll need to stay on my toes.

Are you playing alone, or with others?

Playing, but I can't seem to be able to add any friends. I'm not sure what the issue is yet.

[EDIT] Aha!, Error 5012 is known and being fixed.

I remember some online game telling me "You have no friends" :D

I really like this game. It's pretty dark. As mentioned, the last few maps in Act 1 are dark; I'd say they go beyond what was in Diablo (except for the pile of bodies that I seem to remember). I'm probably a bit past half way thru the second Act, and the story elements are just great. It feels very "expansive" as some of the maps are quite large. The voice acting and sound effects are excellent; there is one type of demon that when you finish it off it unleashes this agonized scream that is just perfect. The story is really developed as well, the various NPCs in the game can have a lot of interesting things to say.

There is a lot of point of click (its diablo after all), I'd say a lot of the skill comes in putting together the character (what skills, what items), and there is some playing skill involved, since you need to be able to activate your skills, move around, get out of tough spots etc.

Some of the casual conversation between you and your followers gets repetitive (although they still say new things), and some of the mechanical stuff is a bit annoying (for example its hard to run past a pack of monsters, because if you click near any enemy you attack instead), but overall this is an excellent addition to the series.

I'm not through Act III quite yet, but I've made those pesky suicide bombers my bitch. With 4.5k life, 1700+ armor, aoe stun, and a demon hunter firing from behind me, they didn't stand a chance.

Here I am: Stallman. (He would cringe that I'm using his name in a proprietary game, but he is sort-of a real-life hardcore barbarian afterall.)

This game is really, really fun, in case any of you guys were on the fence about it.

Yeah, a wise path to go slowly in HC... those Palestinian demons suck if you are squishy.

Love the name.

Yes, it really is. I'm in act III NM right now, and the game just keeps getting better.

Any noticeable lag? (fuck, I hate the always-online thing).

I get about 250ms or so most of the time, which is tolerable for this sort of game (although it would suck fiercely for a FPS).
Rarely there could be some crazy lag, upwards of 2sec, but that's only happened a couple of times to me. It cleared up quickly.

I'm not bent over the battle.net requirement. I'd only play online anyways. I never did Open in D2, and D1 was unplayable on BNet* without using hacks to see if everyone's characters looked reasonably legit.

*I mostly played directly via modem with the kid across the street. Gotta love the nineties!

---

Also, and especially since I'm playing HC, I love that achievements, gold, stash, crafting level, etc., are all account-wide. That should ease the pain of my eventual death. (Well, that, and having some backup characters. I have a 25 wizard as well as the 29 barbarian so far. I'm taking it easy and gearing like mad, rather than blowing through the game.)

Ugh. 250ms would be too annoying for me. I didn't play D2 on battle.net because of the annoying click->...pause...->slash. I spent maybe a thousand hours on D2, 100% on single player. I did play multi on D1, but only because it allowed local networks.

No D3 for me, then. At least until they crack it. Then I'll just torrent it. I paid for D1, D2 and D2X but won't pay for a half-game.

I have similar lag, as measured by the game client itself, but (it seems to me) it doesn't affect game play. I think they only use it to control the item drops. The only time you notice it is when you get disconnected, which sucks. Has happened twice for me, and not since the 3rd day after release.

Good point. I was going by the in-game latency measure, but I haven't noticed any detriment to game play.
Also, my roommate's main HC character died last night (31 demon hunter). He went on to NM without me and died almost immediately in Act 1!
