I have gone through various forums and postings but not found any fixes that help.
Recently I have gone back through the Kernel Options and checked to see if the driver for synaptics had been installed. Seems they had not but after adding these to the kernel still having the same errors.
When running Xorg -configure
It ends with this error:
Xorg detected your mouse at device /dev/input/mice.
Please check your config if the mouse is still not
operational, as by default Xorg tries to autodetect
the protocol.
Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new
To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new'
Server terminated with error (2). Closing log file.
When running X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

(EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit returned 11 for "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
I hope some one can help and point me in the right direction. |

newbeebian,
Welcome to gentoo.
| Code: | VIDEO_CARDS="intel"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics" | is correct. Thats a good first step.
Did you attempt the tests in the install guide, withand no xorg.conf?
With your hardware, Xorg should just work with no xorg.conf
Do | Code: | | emerge -1 twn xterm xclock |
Make sure you have no xorg.conf file - rename it if it exists.
Make sure you have no ~/.xinitrc file - rename it if it exists.
Now do
Xorg should start using twm, displaying three xterms and an analogue clock.
If you don't get that, post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
wgetpaste is your friend here. _________________ Regards,

Hi NeddySeagoon
So I did as suggested and ran the command startx from my ssh shell.
I then saw my netbook display 3 x windows and a clock.
However there were still errors displayed in my other shell:
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8

Warning: locale not supported by C library, locale unchanged

newbeebian,
When xorg starts with no config file, it loots at your hardware then tries all the open source vide drivers that should work with it.
The errors | Code: | [ 31468.516] (EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 31468.520] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0) | are expected and can be ignored as those drivers are not in your VIDEO_CARDS in make.conf.
| Code: | [ 31468.538] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
[ 31468.538] drmOpenDevice: open result is 8, (OK) | show that your kernel is set up correctly to support the intel driver.
Your 3D acceleration should work.
| Code: | [ 31469.194] (EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
[ 31469.195] (--) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: no supported touchpad found
[ 31469.195] (EE) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
[ 31469.223] (EE) PreInit returned 11 for "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
[ 31469.223] (II) UnloadModule: "synaptics" | showd the Synaptics driver looking around for some hardware but not finding any.
| Code: | | [ 31549.115] (II) Power Button: Close | shows a power button event triggering Xorg to shut down.
Be very careful starting Xorg over a ssh link. It normally fails as to be able to start xorg, you need to own the console and ssh doesn't do that.
The three windows and a clock is correct.
I've just checked my Acer Aspire One - I have a 110, with the 8G SDD and originally Linpus Linux.
I get the same errors in the Xorg.0.log and the touchpad seems be be fine. _________________ Regards,

Final edit (hopefully) - thanks to NeddySeagoon and Gusar, I have compiled a list of workarounds to the error (EE) Query no Synaptics: 6003C8, which is caused by Xorg trying to load Synaptics for /dev/input/mouse*. Choose one of the following:
- Ignore the error - your Synaptics device should work regardless.
- Add the following line at the end of Section "InputClass" in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf:
| Code: | | MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*" |
Add the following to /etc/make.conf:
| Code: | | CONFIG_PROTECT="/usr/share/x11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf" |
Compile your kernel without the mouse interface:
| Code: | | CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV=n |
Side question: What's the difference, if any, between /usr/share/X11 and /etc/X11?

piedar,
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf belongs to Xorg and is updated by emerge when Xorg is built.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d is yours to play with and overrides /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/
The correct solution is therefe to copy /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf and make your changes there. _________________ Regards,

HI,
Thanks for your suggestions but now I am more confused... I did state I was new to this so please bare with me
My situation is this:
If I use the command startx on the netbook directly the clock etc loads no worries and then when I use the command exit in the window it closes fine but the errors are displayed as I pasted in above.
@ NeddySeagoon what do you mean by this?
"showd the Synaptics driver looking around for some hardware but not finding any"
@ piedar
This directory has not been created - does not exist anywhere on my system:
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf
Is this the problem that these directories and files are not created when building Xorg?
Aside of this if I can disregard the error mesages why can I not get GNOME start when starting X?
This was kind of the original problem I had.. that X seemed to be working aside of the error messages. When I first installed X I did the test with xterm and twn and three windows opened - I did not use the xclock as I dont remember reading this from the how to's on installing X.
I then proceeded to install GNOME and then this did not start and gave the errors as I displayed at the beginning of the post:
/root/.xinitrc: line 2: exec: gnome-session: not found
xinit: connection to X server lost
I had assumed that due to the other errors that were being displayed the problem was with X but given the info above it would seem the issue is else where....
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Many Thanks. |

newbeebian,
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf should come free with the Xorg synaptics driver, which you get with INPUT_DEVICES="synaptics" in make.conf.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf is not provided be default. You must make it if you want it - by copying the file from /usr/share.
Try | Code: | | equery b <filename> | that needs gentoolkit
As your Xorg starts and your touchpad should work at well as mine, lets try to get Gnome running. In your /home/newbeebian directory, as user
newbeebian create the file .xinitrc with the one line content
| Code: | | exec ck-launch-session gnome-session |
Now when user newbeebian does startx, Gnome should start.
Do not attempt to run a GUI as root horrible things may happen. _________________ Regards,

This makes perfect sense, but it's not working for me - I get the same result as if the file in /etc didn't exist. Editing /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf directly works though... |

The overriding does not work exactly as NeddySeagoon explains. Rather it goes like this: Files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ are parsed and applied, then files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and finally /etc/X11/xorg.conf
So /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf is applied, which instructs the synaptics driver to all touchpad devices. And because the touchpad is there twice - as /dev/input/eventX and also as /dev/input/mouseX, you get an error. It's non-fatal, your touchpad will work as an /dev/input/eventX device, but still an error.
The real solution is adjusting the xf86-input-synaptics package so that it'll ship with that MatchDevicePath line in the 50-synaptics.conf file. Or you don't compile the mouse interface into your kernel, that way there will be no /dev/input/mouseX, only /dev/input/eventX. Or you simply ignore the error |

Hi Everyone so thanks so far for your help so far
Appologies for starting another topic about the same issue I am having but for some very strange and bizaar reason I am unable to update or reply to this topic any longer
Xserver Query no Synaptics: 6003C8 on Acer Aspire One
Given the last suggestions I was given:
" As your Xorg starts and your touchpad should work at well as mine, lets try to get Gnome running. In your /home/newbeebian directory, as user
newbeebian create the file .xinitrc with the one line content
Code:
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
Now when user newbeebian does startx, Gnome should start.
Do not attempt to run a GUI as root horrible things may happen "
This is what happens:
xauth: file /home/neewbeebian/.serverauth.3624 does not exist
xauth: file /home/neewbeebian/.Xauthority does not exist
xauth: file /home/neewbeebian/.Xauthority does not exist
Permissions on the files are as follows:
-rw-r--r-- 1 neewbeebian neewbeebian 37 May 8 00:22 /home/neewbeebian/.xinitrc
-rw------- 1 neewbeebian neewbeebian 0 May 8 00:24 /home/neewbeebian/.Xauthority
I have done my best to search for the answer is this a permissions issue for the user "neewbeebian". Or is the problem lying elsewhere.
Please help me to get gnome up and running. If you need more information from me please let me know what you require - I am new to linux and gentoo so please be patient with me...
Thanks |
