My favorite jazz bass vamp of all time. G - C, F# - B, G# - E - B

Bitches Brew

Theme appears right about 2:50 into the piece.

I don't know who I thought that was, but didn't realize it was America.

I hear clicking, faint drums and what sounds like a sax. Up to that point though, it epitomizes the type of Jazz I can't do. Reminds me of beat poets.

The first two minutes and forty seconds is over a repeating C bass note, and is sort of a studio experiment... there's tape looping and cutting being used to provide echo, etc. From 2:50 the bass vamp (think riff) kicks in, all of the music is improvised on top of the vamp. For me, that G-C | F#-B | G#-E-B vamp just sounds... creepy, and slightly wicked. What is born on top of that is quite amazing, but it might take a few listening sessions to get into.

Still stuck on Bitches Brew. I've heard this album countless times, but I keep finding more inside the music to keep my attention fresh. My mother had the original vinyl back in the 70s, so I do remember hearing bits and pieces of the weirdness then. I picked up the CD back around '92 or so. Listened to it about once a year or so. But now, approaching 40, I'm hearing structure in it that had eluded me for years.

Here's the full album via YouTube. Turn down the lights, and open up :

Which instrument is the bass vamp? Like I mentioned, clicking (no idea what instrument that is), drums & sax are what I hear from 2:50ish until a bit after 3:00 when it picks up pace and gets louder.

Although I admit from that point on it is a bit better.

The bass.

The clicking is miles snapping his fingers indicating rhythm. There's a bass clarinet playing low notes floating off of the bass vamp. The electric piano comes in as well.

If you aren't hearing the bass, I think there might be an issue with either your equalizer settings or your headphones.

Oh wait, try this link. I removed the &fmt=18, which might have had a negative result (instead of the usual increase in quality) for you.

Well, thanks for your trouble. Using my headphones actually helped. With the laptop speakers and a moderate volume, the bass sounded like some kind of hand-played bongo-like drum. Now that I've heard it properly with the headphones, I can more easily hear the vibration in the strings (when not using headphones).

I'll give it another listen tomorrow or this weekend when I have more time.

What does 'format=18' do? About the only difference I can hear between the two is more hiss without the 18.

Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra) - official video

I really like that song, but just listened to Boardface and didn't care for it. Will check out the successor.

Wow, 3 albums and only one other "passable" song (which wouldn't have made me look at any others).

Gotye - I Feel Better

I like Rolling in the Deep, but not much else, unfortunately (at least from 21, haven't heard 19 yet). A shame since she has a good voice. And I honestly don't see why whatitsname won the Grammy.

Adele - 21 (2011) - Full Album

I guess Rolling in the Deep won for Song of the Year. I'd only heard about 'Someone Like You' winning (for best pop solo performance, whatever that is).
