Typing this from links.. unfortunately. If anyone can tell me if I'm nuts, I'd appreciate it. I began installing early early this morning, and got up to the initial emerge --sync, which began at like 8-10AM or so. Had a few snags in getting it set up and syncing with a mirror that actually works, but it at least looked like it should be working. It gave me one message about an rsync server not having the right directory (which was nothing new), but then it newlined and stopped, and I haven't gotten a "liveCD" prompt on that console since then, although it doesn't look like it segfaulted or anything stupid.
That, however, was easily like 8-10AM, and it is now going on midnight and it still hasn't budged. Is that normal or is something probably screwed up and I need to fix it? Furthermore is there any way to check? (unfortunatly(?) I put it on -q when I started it x.x)
EDIT:
Guess I should add a bit more info here. I'm running on a 1.42GHz G4 iBook 1.5GB RAM and my download speed this morning was around 600MB/hour overall. It does appear to be taking up some of my connection, but I can't actually tell that it's doing anything, and now it's been like 14 hours or more since I started it.
The last line emerge gave me was: rsync: change_dir "/metadata" (in gentoo-distfiles) failed: no such file or directory (2)
which I had also gotten with every other rsync mirror, but this time there was no "retrying" or anything else, just a newline and a blinking cursor; no prompt and although I can type things it doesn't respond to anything. It seems like it isn't broken any particular way, but holy crap how long does sync take?

D'oh. Well, at least I don't feel so stupid anymore. Is there any way I can kill emerge on my other console/is that a good idea/will it fix itself?
EDIT: Well I figured out top easy enough. I guess I'll just kill it and see what happens...
Ha! nothing bad. Amazing considering that net-config segfaulted on me earlier x.x |

For future reference, ctr+c will stop most things running in a terminal or terminal emulator including portage. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order. |

| Ha. Thanks. Now, I re-started sync with the rsync that seemed to be working, but this time with -v. Now it's downloading an amd64 live-dvd iso image.. is it supposed to do that? I don't even have amd64 under my accept_keywords list o.0 |

It shouldn't be downloading any isos. Check if your mirror is correctly selected. _________________ emerge --quiet redefined | E17 vids: I, II |

Awesome. Well, thanks for letting me know, it was downloading a 2.8GB DVD image for apparently no reason.
D'oh. I was having trouble getting mirrorselect to work earlier, and I didn't bother using it for sync x.x. After setting up rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage now sync is working correctly and even removed all the garbage files it downloaded before . |
