when I try to update my system with
sudo emerge --update world
it says that I have Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict.
Right now I have no gui so it's a little hard for me to navigate but here is an example of some of these errors
(xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.8.2::gentoo,installed) pulled in by =xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.8* required by (xfce-base/libxfcegui4-4.8.1::gentoo,installed)
(xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.9.1::gentoo,ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by >=xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.9.1 required by (xfce-base/thunar-1.3.2::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (and 11 more with the same problem)

Without digging deep I'd say emerge -C every conflicting package and just run emerge -avutDN again.
