Does anyone have experience of running KMail2 under xfce? Does it work? _________________ /Phil |

I don't see why it wouldn't... _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

I don't think you can install KMail without akonadi _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

Well, akonadi is the problem I would like to get rid of. Then it is no use to migrate to xfce _________________ /Phil |

KMail2 does work under non-KDE environments. I've used it under AwesomeWM.
But yes, KMail2 still requires the Nepomuk/Akonadi stack, which gets started if it's not already running when you launch KMail. You could run KMail via a script that would shut down Nepomuk and Akonadi before exiting, if the continual resource drain is an issue. |

If you just want to kill Nepomuk/Akonadi, why not try thunderbird + USE="-sematic-desktop"? That would get rid of the annoying bits of KDE and save to good bits. I have been extremely pleased with thunderbird's performance and kde without sematic-desktop is like kde, just a lot faster. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order. |

Yes,
To recompile KDE with USE="-sematic-desktop", seems to be the trick. However, I think the KDE developers make a huge mistake if KMail2 is dependent on akonadi. It should be a choice if one would like to use Kmail2 with- or without akonadi and sematic desktop.
But it sounds promising if khumba is right | Quote: |

Heh?!? Akonadi is the CENTRAL technology of kdepim. Removing it as a dependency from kmail2 would leave a non-functional mess (and don't say now even with akonadi kmail2 is non-funtional). _________________ "der mac dennoch wesen geil"

Is akonadi brought in eventhough USE="-sematic-desktop"?
Otherwise I figured
# echo "kde-base/kde-meta -semantic-desktop" /etc/portage/package.use
# emerge -uDN kde-meta
Is the right thing to do, to get KDE without akonadi and semantic-desktop? _________________ /Phil

Yes, for the reason franzf explained.
| Code: | emerge -qpv kmail
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/shared-desktop-ontologies-0.9.0
[ebuild N ] dev-db/libiodbc-3.52.7-r1 USE="gtk -static-libs"
[ebuild N ] dev-db/virtuoso-odbc-6.1.4
[ebuild N ] dev-db/virtuoso-server-6.1.4 USE="readline -kerberos -ldap"
[ebuild N ] dev-libs/soprano-2.7.5 USE="dbus raptor redland virtuoso -clucene -debug -doc -test"
[ebuild N ] app-office/akonadi-server-1.7.2 USE="sqlite -mysql -postgres -test"
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdelibs-4.8.2 USE="acl alsa bzip2 lzma mmx opengl semantic-desktop* spell sse sse2 ssl udev -3dnow (-altivec) (-aqua) -debug -doc -fam -handbook -jpeg2k -kerberos -nls -openexr -policykit -test -udisks (-upnp) -upower -zeroconf"
[ebuild N ] kde-base/nepomuk-4.8.2 USE="(-aqua) -debug -handbook"
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdepimlibs-4.8.2 USE="semantic-desktop* (-aqua) -debug -handbook -ldap -prison -test"
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kdepim-icons-4.8.2 USE="(-aqua)"
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kdepim-runtime-4.8.2 USE="(-aqua) -debug"
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kdepim-common-libs-4.8.2 USE="(-aqua) -debug"
[ebuild N ] kde-base/korganizer-4.8.2 USE="(-aqua) -debug -handbook -kontact"
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kmail-4.8.2 USE="(-aqua) -debug -handbook -kontact -test"
The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
#required by kde-base/kmail-4.8.2, required by kmail (argument)
>=kde-base/kdepimlibs-4.8.2 semantic-desktop
#required by kde-base/nepomuk-4.8.2
>=kde-base/kdelibs-4.8.2 semantic-desktop |

Yes, you will avoid the semantic desktop using the above method. Be aware that if you are actually trying to remove it, you will need to get creative and remove several packages before portage will actually do it. Some things, like akonadi, will complain and insist that <package> be built with semantic desktop. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order. |
