on my amd64 system
Code:
emerge gnustep-base
just worked fine. You may have picked up a bad ebuild and/or package. suggest waiting a few hours, removing both, forcing a sync, and rerunning
Code:
emerge gnustep-base
. Do you have root status while doing this?

start of my build looks like:

The configure step is missing the files:
Code:
/usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/filesystem.sh
/usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/print_unique_pathlist.sh

How can I determine the package of this files?
The execution of
Code:
qfile -q /usr/GNUstep/System/Library/Makefiles/filesystem.sh

shows nothing.

try running just
Code:
emerge --sync
emerge -avuND gnustep-base
if that fails run
Code:
ls -al /var/tmp/portage/gnustep-base/gnustep-base-1.24.0-r1/work/gnustep-base-1.24.0 | wgetpaste
look for a configure file
if you find one read it
as i read what you have shown gnustep-base/gnustep-base-1.24.0-r1 is the package that creates the file structure under /usr. the ebuild first makes the working file structure under /var.

I can't find anything in the configure script, but
Code:
emerge -e gnustep-base
did the job. Gnustep works fine. Let's update oolite ;-)
