I'm getting the same error.
I think KDE3.5 is no longer supported. _________________ #Joseph |

does it mean kde-sunset also stopped support for kde3?
kde-3.5 is a nice package to have working for lesser resources machines.
can i have python-2.6 also working along with 2.7 and 3.1?
then this problem can go _________________ reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name) |

Hi,
You can still use KDE 3 from overlay, but it is not officially supported.
Thank you. |

I've got the same problem. We generally use KDE4 but need KDE3.5 for running some older Terminals and for Quanta+ which is not ported to KDE4 unfortunately.
As far as I understand, Superkaramba generally is dispensable, but it's needed by some other package as a dependency. Does anybody know how to find out? |

If you mean, how do you learn why Portage still wants Superkaramba, then a good place to start is emerge --pretend --verbose --tree targets, which will show you which package marked superkaramba as a dependency. |

these packages i have masked for the kde upgrade nagging of the portage.
seems superkaramba is only ornamental desktop appearance enhancer _________________ reach out a little bit more to catch it (DON'T BELIEVE the advocate part under my user name) |

Thanks for your suggestions. Based on some hint I got offline meanwhile, I took another route.
I did echo "kde-base/superkaramba-3.5.10" > /etc/portage/profile/package.provided
Thus avoiding the need to find out what is pulling the package |

Best practise would be to add the python-2.6 dependency to the superkaramba ebuild in your local overlay, that's a no-brainer and would prevent a messy world file spiked with kde-3.5 dependencies. _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

ps: but imho, should be better to send this to maintainer of kde-3.5 portage. i did my part, maybe now is your turn to do something too? |

But then I thought you could contribute that to your kde3 overlay maintainers, so probably lots of other people won't have to deal with the issue.
I'm not a KDE-3.5 user anymore since 4.0 has seen the light of day - I don't even know where to get the ebuild to begin with. _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

Funny, where did I say that again?
Seems obvious that trying to get that dependency to the kde3 maintainers would be in your best interest and improve the situation for everyone using it. _________________ backend.cpp:92:2: warning: #warning TODO - this error message is about as useful as a cooling unit in the arctic |

You're really not doing yourself a favour here, unless there exists some unspoken law to never ever mention KDE4 in any KDE3.5 thread, that I don't know of. I was just trying to explain why it is probably not up to me to forward this to the kde3 overlay maintainers. If you rather keep this solution to this thread so that any new kde3 user must first undertake n forum searches to resolve dependency issues (python is not the only one) before being able to fully enjoy it, I'm perfectly fine with that.
Oh, btw, here is my own quote from the Trinity thread:

with all due respect, you have woken a dormant 11.8 month old thread...
shouting on others for trying to help (genstorm's answer has nothing to do with KDE4) doesn't shine on you with a better light.

This was totally uncalled for, and we won't tolerate this kind of personal, emotional and offensive tone here. Consider yourself warned.
First, the fact that he likes or doesn't like kde3 doesn't disqualify his words by any means. As long as he's on topic, your personal issues with him, or your religious differences about what desktop is better are totally irrelevant here. Keep them personal and everyone of us will be happier.
Second, you came to resurrect an old thread for no good reason, but, if you are the part that has the interest you shouldn't really be telling anyone to do the work for you. That's highly rude in my book. Not to take into account that you just landed in this forum. The fact that he is giving a tip or trying to help doesn't grant you the right to ask from him anything more. You should just be grateful for what he, voluntarily, is giving you. Or, if you don't like it or don't need it, just say "thanks" or shut up and move on. No one here owes you anything.
Third, you are not the one to tell the people what threads they can help with. Each one acts willingly and in a completely non interested basis, and helps with the issues they can or want. If you want to give orders as a captain, pay for technical support. But beware that even payed workers do have rights, and deserve respect, just like any human being.
This thread really has no longer a purpose. If anyone thinks it does, please, poke me privately and I might consider reopening it. Now closing. _________________ Gentoo Handbook | My website |
