I don't know how but I got my problem fixed.
I think I forgot some drivers in my kernel config.
I'm using now kernel 2.6.0 test11 and it works fine for me.
I emerged alsa-utils serveral times after I reconfigured my kernel, in every possible way.
My kernel settings are as follows: Code: | <M> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
<M> Sequencer support
< > Sequencer dummy client
<*> OSS API emulation
<M> OSS Mixer API
<M> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
<*> OSS Sequencer API
[ ] Verbose printk
[ ] Debug
Generic devices --->
PCI devices --->
ALSA USB devices ---> |
In the section PCI devices I found my sound Card: Code: | <M> VIA 82C686A/B 8233 South Bridge |
it's the onboard sound card on the ASUS A7V8X (chipset Northbridge: VIA KT400 and Southbridge: VIA VT8235)
then I did:
Code: | # make && make modules_install
# mount /dev/hda2 (my boot partition)
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/ |
then rebooted
and:
Code: | # emerge alsa-lib alsa-utils
# update-modules |
DO NOT emerge alsa-driver (it's in the kernel)
for unmuting my card I tried both of these (both worked well), either:
Code: | # amixer set Master 100 unmute
# amixer set PCM 100 unmute
OR
# alsamixer (and unmute then what you need, do not forget to turn the volume up) |
to save the setting for every restart, I did:
Code: | # rc-update add alsasound boot
# alsactl store |
This works fine for me,
hth

My understanding was that you do not have to emerge alsa-libs or alsa-utils after a kernel recompile, but you do have to for alsa-driver if you do not include the drivers in the kernel. |

Yes I think thats correct, you don't have to recompile it. But if you didn't emerge alsa-lib and -utils before you won't be able to unmute your card.
What the alsa-driver is concerned I think you have to. I did use the kernel intern driver. It works quite well!

Well I've got mine working now but I had to enable devfs again. I had completely turned it off and unmerged it. I would have thought that since ALSA is part of 2.6 that they would have got it to work without devfs. Strange. And I seem to have suffered a big drop in MIDI performance. I use sfxload to load in SoundFonts for my DOS games in DOSEMU. It wasn't perfect before but now even just playing a MIDI on the command line with pmidi seems to suffer from slowdowns. |

I'm still having issues!
I've tried pretty much every suggestion I've seen here as well as a few variations of my own.
Everything seems to be working correctly, but I have no output. Not as root or my normal user.
I'm using kernel 2.6test11 with a Intel 810 chipset. Everything is compiled as modules (built-in does not work either) and my kernel is configured like this:
Code: |
<M> Sound card support
<M> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
<M> Sequencer support
< > Sequencer dummy client
[*] OSS API emulation
<M> OSS Mixer API
<M> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
[*] OSS Sequencer API
[ ] Verbose printk
[ ] Debug
PCI devices
<M> Intel i8x0/MX440, SiS 7012; Ali 5455; NForce Audio; AMD768/8111
|
I have snd-pcm-oss in my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 and /etc/init.d/alsasound seems to startup fine.
This is what my /etc/modules.conf looks like.
Code: |
### modules-update: start processing /etc/modules.d/alsa
# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
# module options should go here
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
# card #1
# alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
# alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
# alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
# alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
# alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
|
And this is my amixer output:

Am I missing anything? Can anyone notice anything I've done wrong? Do I need to recompile anything in Gnome or otherwise to get it to correctly utilise the sound card? I've tried everything I can find and as I'm not getting any errors I'm finding it hard to progress - any help would be greatly appreciated! _________________ <!-- Insert funny comment here-->

What happens when you compile in sound support and ALSA rather than use modules.
I'm using the i810 here also, but I have verything compiled in except for the i810 module. |

I'm having the same problem with no sound output, no errors. My sound was working in 2.4, when I compiled 2.6.0-test11 sound was working when i booted into 2.6.0-test11. However I think during the process before I went to bed i ran an update-modules - I think this could have caused my sound to stop as it might have been using the sound modules from 2.4.20. Then when I woke up this morning there was no sound at all, there's no errors, xmms plays the song but no output, my mixer levels are all 100% but when i try amixer set Master 100 unmute the unmute command never worked, however sound still worked in 2.4 without the unmute part... _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

After booting back into 2.4.20-gentoo-r9 emerge unmerging gentoo-dev-sources removing alsa-lib, utils recompiling kernel, installing alsa-driver, lib, utils again, putting the same settings as i had when sound was working in 2.4.20, and surprise surpise no sound output, channels arent muted, sound card works, im in windows now and sound works... I give up on gentoo i'm going back to windows where things don't stop working all of a sudden then refuse to work without some major work or reinstallation. _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

what did you do exactly after you booted the first time in the 2.6 test11 kernel? |

Nothing, sound just worked.. I fixed my problem in 2.4.20, it seems to be a problem with alsa 0.98 so i installed 0.92 and got sound working again, but no matter what i do in 2.6.0-test11 i can't get sound going at all _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

Yep, i'm basically having the same problem with no sound output accept im using an audigy, which uses the emu10k1 chipset _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

It might be possible you have the wrong driver selected in the kernel config.
did you try different drivers? |

There's only one option for emu10k1 ..
Edit: i've got it working, somehow.. with alsa lib, utils 0.92
Edit 2: that was short lived, quit out of kde, then back in and it stopped working
Edit 3: ok now its definately working, lol.. cheers _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

Ok, basically I followed the same kernel configuration, everything as modules.
Next I emerged alsa-lib-0.9.2.ebuild, then alsa-utils-0.9.2.ebuild, ran alsamixer increased the master volume to 100, started kde and sound worked..
However I think i've come to an understanding of why my sound would refuse to work, kde 3.2.0b2 .. I was testing sound in 3.1.4 and it was working fine, closed and opened kde 3.1.4 a few times, rebooted.. sound worked.. changed over to 3.2.0b2 and sound stopped working completely, even when i went back to 3.1.4 no sound. So i'm getting rid of 3.2.0b2 for the time being. _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

Sorry about the lack of details but its 3 in the morning and im about to hit the sack :p
I've just tried 1.0rc2 and it works fine, so it must've been kde 3.2.0 beta all this time.. doh _________________ Linux insomniac 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2 #1 Thu Dec 11 21:52:12 NZDT 2003 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |

m@o,
thanks I've recompiled and it works great using your guide...
however
I get 2 modprobe fatal errors when booting (sounds works still)
Code: |
modprobe: FATAL: module snd_card_0 not found. |
right, I can get rid of this by defining what snd_card_0 is in /etc/modules.d/alsa but my doing so I get more errors saying that the modules for my card are already loaded
the second is
Code: |
FATAL: snd_seq_oss is already in kernel
|
above sounds right since I see it get loaded before, so why is it doing it again? If I define what snd_card_0 is I get multiple "already loaded" errors. If I comment it out I get the above two.
here is my /etc/modules.d/alsa file
Code: |

I've using emu10k1 as a module in the kernel
NOTE: I've pretty much got the whole thing commented out :/
ideas? |

I've tried about everything in this topic/post. And I can't get sound to work. I've compiled in everything as modules. Take a look at my setup and please let me know what I've done wrong. I think I've got everything loaded properly, but can't get amixer to work.
Code: |

<M> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
<*> OSS Sequencer API
[ ] Verbose printk
[ ] Debug
<M> EMU10K1 (SB Live! & Audigy, E-mu APS)
|
Then copied kernel to /boot and rebooted.
