|
|
I'm running Thunderbird ESR 10.0.0.3 with German localization.
After a recent update, Thunderbird began acting strangely.
First, it no longer closes cleanly. When I close it, the window closes, but the process stays running. I have to use kill or KDE systemmonitor to kill it.
Second, Enigmail (or OpenPGP -- which is it? Nobody seems to know anymore) no longer plays nice with GnuPG. It fails to detect the GnuPG agent, even though the agent is there:
| Code: | $ which gpg
/usr/bin/gpg
$ which gpg2
/usr/bin/gpg2
|
But in the Enigmail settings, I get this:
http://imagebin.org/206386
(Translation: the line above the path field says "GPG not found")
Weirder still is that this *sometimes* just works, although the last four or five times it has not.
Is this a configuration issue? Just a bug? Do you have any suggestions? I do have a number of add-ons installed, but keep in mind this used to work
The eix output:
| Code: | $ eix thunderbird-bin
[I] mail-client/thunderbird-bin

For the "GPG not found" error: try .
To be automatically started during login, you have to write something into some file. Do not remember right now. |

I tried it, and got the following output:
| Code: |
GPG_AGENT_INFO=/tmp/gpg-Zf8OdL/S.gpg-agent:11785:1; export GPG_AGENT_INFO; |
It's not clear what I am supposed to do with this. Is GnuPG supposed to run as a daemon somewhere?
Here, when I look at running processes:
| Code: | blort@stinkpad ~ $ ps -ef | grep gpg
blort 3276 1 0 10:54 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/gpg-agent --sh --no-use-standard-socket --daemon --default-cache-ttl 300 --max-cache-ttl 999999
blort 11785 1 0 14:35 ? 00:00:00 gpg-agent --daemon
blort 12590 11776 0 14:54 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto gpg
blort@stinkpad ~ $
|
That first line was started when I started thunderbird, the second when I ran the command you suggested. If you have a link to your source, I could look it up.
I discovered I had colliding Thunderbird installations, the bin and the source; I removed the bin version and upgraded the source version to 10.0.3. Even when I disable enigmail, I still get the "OpenPGP" menu in thunderbird. Isn't that supposed to disappear? It suggests I have got some unseen leftovers lurking somewhere in my configuration.
I tried disabling all the extensions. It closed cleanly a couple of times, then the problem was back. Very weird. |

So I had a look in the add-ons manager again, and even though all the add-ons are disabled, they all have this message:
| Code: | | <add-on> will be disabled after you restart Thunderbird. |
Uh, but I already restarted Thunderbird. Six times.
Starting in safe mode seems to actually disable the add-ons.
What a car crash. Thunderbird 3.x worked just fine, I am starting to wonder why I upgraded. |
