|
|
Hello,
I went through several articles, posts, threads on how to install Gento using Live DVD.
The latest thread I read was about installing Gentoo 11.2 >> http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6778848.html#6778848
As of now I got/understood following >> 1) Partition the disk 2) copy the dvd to disk for installation
Question is shall I replicate all dir's as it is from 12.1 Live DVD to hdd or ..?
I don't/wont be having internet connection to use tarball so only option is to use live DVD.
Any1 can brief me particularly about this release?
Thanks!
Regards,
Amey. |

sco1984,
Welcome to Gentoo.
That should still work for the 12.1 DVD ... but its a really bad idea to try to do a binary install.
First, it won't be your gentoo, it will be likewhoas'. You will miss the learning you get while installing Gentoo. Thats a double edged sword.
Your system is up and running but you now have to maintain it when it full of user data. You will miss the opportunity to practice.
Keep in mind that Gentoo isn't really a distro at all. Its a set of tools that allows you to build your own distro, which is what you do when you install Gentoo following the handbook.
Everyones Gentoo is different. _________________ Regards,

Yes I kept that in mind.
As of now I am using Virtualbox to install Gentoo 12.1
My goal is to make a standard VDI image for testing of ZFS On Linux. [ Have plan to switch from Solaris to Gentoo if everything goes smooth on Gentoo ]
Is it possible to get ready made template of Gentoo 12.1 or any1 working on it?
It's really hard to find a Gentoo expert in my region.
I have virtualbox & vmware both so not an issue any template is ok.
Regards,
Amey. |

sco1984,
If you want a ready made Gentoo VM image, start a new topic in Other Things Gentoo and ask. Lots of people will have them but they will all be different.
Be sure to say what you want it for and what the host hardware will be. You don't want an AMD optimised Gentoo VM if you have an Intel CPU.
If you specifically want the 12.1 LiveDVD, in your VM image, a good place to ask is in #gentoo-ten at irc.freenode.net. The DVD developers can be found there.
The DVD is intended to allow users to evaluate Gentoo without installing it, it is not intended to be installed.
When you are evaluating responses keep in mind that there is no such thing as a 'standard' Gentoo as there can be with binary distros. _________________ Regards,

according to the rel notes there is "Gentoo Install Wizard" feature added.
I have not yet looked at 12.1 how that Install wizard looks like.
Have you tried the install wizard? |

For those that didn't get it, the wizard thing was only on April 1. It's no longer there on the announcement page (or the DVD, unless you change your clock back) _________________ “And even in authoritarian countries, information networks are helping people discover new facts and making governments more accountable.”– Hillary Clinton, Jan. 21, 2010 |

If you don't have an internet connection, I'm not sure that Gentoo is a good idea. You really
do need to download a fair amount of source code, and if you can't do that then one of
the distributions that come on a bootable CD would be a better bet.
The last time I installed Gentoo in VirtualBox it was entirely straightforward and according
to the manual. I booted from a CD image within VirtualBox, and then did a standard
Gentoo install. (Any bootable CD will do to install Gentoo - you don't need a Gentoo CD).
You can build Gentoo without a direct Internet connection, using Sneakernet, but it's a
tedious process and having done it a few times, I wouldn't want to do it again.
