I am trying to do an "emerge --newuse --deep --update" as recommended before I do the "emerge --depclean" recommended by emerge.

I am puzzled by the messages I am getting. Portage seems to be recommending an unnecessary downgrade of gnome-menus. I don't understand why and I don't know how to get the problem resolved.

Featherfoot,

The couple of times I had a package blocking a newer package I just unmerged it and installed the newer. I'm not sure though of the reason why gnome-base/gnome-menus is getting downgraded.

Did you install gnome with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64"? That might be the reason as I see there's no complaints when you issue ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" emerge gnome-menus -p or emerge gnome-menus -p. The latter confuses me. I thought it would pull gnome-base/gnome-menus-2.30.5!

For now if you want to continue with the -depclean, add gnome-base/gnome-menus to package.mask and see if that prevents the error

Good luck

I did have >=gnome-base/gnome-menus-3.2.0.1 set up in /etc/package.keywords. That's what was puzzling me.

I eventually set the gnome-menus version number to >=gnome-base/gnome-menus-3.0.1. That fixed it.

Apparently portage was confused by the 3.0.1 version in portage which was a candidate to be emerged even though a later version was unmasked, and in fact, already emerged...

Thanks for your help.
