I've tried going through the steps to enable AA but I don't think it has worked, and I am certain that subpixel AA has not.
A checklist of what I have done:
added directories to XftConfig and XF86Config
loading "freetype" and "type1" modules
I didn't see any change
I added 'match edit rgba = rgb;' to XftConfig ... no change.
I am using xfontsel to judge whether or not there is a change in the font display and some of them (true type) look jagged.
btw, if someone can at least help me get gVim looking pretty I can tolerate the rest.
Thanks |

Try launching xterm in the following mannor to see if aa is indeed working:
Code: |
xterm -fa "Andale Mono" -fs 8 -fg white -bg black

You were right, xfontsel does not show any antialiasing but I've never seen a better looking xterm.
ATerm, however, does not antialias and neither does gVim, is it possible to get them to do this?
Thanks for the help. |

You might have to have a google about it, see what you can dig up. |

I'm pretty sure GTK 1 apps don't have any ability to do AA fonts outside of the gdkxft hack. GTK 2, however, fully supports AA. |

There is a hack that allows gtk+ 1.x applications to use anti-aliasing. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

The googling I have does has led me to gdkxft which I have installed ... kind of. I copied this .gtkrc file into my home directory like it requested, after the emerge it said my XftConfig file was ok, but it doesn't do anything. I haven't been able to find any sort of guide for gdkxft online either. The readme does have some useful suggestions for troubleshooting and I am going through that at the moment. I would be nice to know if I was working towards an unattainable goal: does anyone have an antialiased gVim running?
And thanks again for the help. |

I used it some time ago on a debian box and it worked fine, never tried it with gvim but I can only say that it would have to work being that it is a gtk+ application. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

Ok, just for future searchers looking for answers:
Near the end of the readme it suggests the possibility that the LD_PRELOAD environment variable is being cleared, this was the problem in my case. Launching X with 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libgdkxft.so startx' solved this problem.
My gVim looks quite good now, thanks everyone. |

Awesome, I haven't been able to get any antialiasing :( Hopefully this will fix it. |

Just another thing to remember: edit your gdkxft.conf file. The rules are (and I am working off the top of my head here) !<font> means no antialiasing for that font, and <font> enables antialiasing for that font. You can use wildcards.
Good luck
[edit: corrected file to gdkxft.conf] |
