Hi all!

Sometimes right after login via KDM or quite seldom during an otherwise runnig KDE session i experience some lockups of the DE up to 30 secs or so. This does not happen evertime. It seems to happen signifcantly more often if there is at least one other active KDE session (different user logged in) .

When these lookups resolve I find an error msg in .xsession-errors complaining that the message bus would not send a reply.

Actual examples are:

korgac(4856)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

akonadi_kcal_resource_2(551)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

[31424:31424:27986975229:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(239)] Failed to call method: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

"D-Bus communication error 'org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply': 'Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.'"

(There are many other dbus relates messages as well that seem not to cause the delays discussed here)

After playing around several weeks without a real result (any local knowledge of dbus and polkit is still not existing), i found a workaound:

Disabling the acl use-flag for udev seems to resolve the delays for me.

But afaik this should not be the way to go... So... any ideas about that? Could it be a polkit misconfiguration/problem (I actually never touched it)???

any hints are greatly welcome....

Thank you

Looks like this is what Lamarque describes here:
http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2012/03/desktop-freezes-in-48x.html
Problem: plasmoids doing synchronous calls to kded
Solution: Wait for a fix to the problematic plasmoids (or fix it yourself, if you can), or remove the plasmoid.

Thanks for pointing me to that.

The problem started quite a while before 4.8. I've indeed tried disabling all plasmoids before (not since) 4.8 wihout success, and i'm devinitly not running apper or nm, since this a workstation i a static environment even without wifi.

However I'll once more try disabling folderview and rssnow, the only plasmoids besides the "standard" panel that are currently enabled. Will post results tomorrow.

thank you

Could you remove all your clocks, or at least disable "show events"-CheckBox in the clock settings->calendar? Do you have korganizer reminder running? -> disable it.
akonadi_kcal_resource_2
korgac
are related to korganizer and kcalendar.

Thank you once again!

The issue is diffcult to test reliably because it is not reproducable every time. However turning off plasmoids, most kdepim related stuff, and nepomuk seems to improve the situation to some extent but does not resolve it. Some lockups and errors like this:

"D-Bus communication error 'org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply': 'Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.'"

perisist. I don't know yet what's causing that as there no more context around it in .xsession-errors.

As mentioned earlier turning on the fancy KDE(PIM) things discussed and disabling udev-acl (USE=-acl emerge -1 udev) does relsove the lockups and errors for now, but rises other (known) problems -- mostly cups and hplip related... How does this fit into the picture?

Ok, forget the udev thing.. Just had the first lockup with udev -acl in 10 days... However there were two kde sessions (different users) running and it occured in a very stripped down setup (no nepomuk, most of kdepim turned off, no fanc plasmoids...)

arghhh....

Maybe your dbus session dies just before you have the lockups? Typically, you should have just one dbus session running per user, so it should be easy to figure out if you don't have enough dbus sessions running.

To figure it out, you can use any process viewer in "tree" view (for instance htop) so that you can clearly discern the parent dbus processes and count them.

Hi

Thanx for all the great ideas!

ppurka's point seems quite close -- considering the following observation:

I had a kde session running that experienced one of these lockups. According to w(1) this session was started at 21:19

>markus :0 21:19 ?xdm? 4:57 0.01s /bin/sh /usr/bin/startkde

After the lockup resolved, i had one dbus session for user markus listed by ps with pid 8972:

>markus 8972 0.2 0.0 22232 2976 ? Ss 21:19 0:08 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 4 --print-address 6 --session

ok, now the interesting thing is that $ls -ld /proc/8972 showed a modification time (== process creation time ??) of 21:35...

>dr-xr-xr-x 7 markus markus 0 Mar 8 21:35 /proc/8972

This needs to be confirmed, however could ihmo mean that dbus died for some reason and was restarted at 21:35 (~about 16m after the login) maybe when the seesion resumed (??)

Will now look for any relicts of a dead dbus ...

cheers, markus

edit:

maybe my last assumtion is just completely wrong because $ps axu shows a start time of 21:19 for dbus-daemon. So maybe $ls -ld /proc/<PID> != process creation time??

From message

korgac(4856)/kdecore (K*TimeZone*): KSystemTimeZones: ktimezoned initialize() D-Bus call failed: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

KSystemTimeZones is one of the kded4 modules. Probably your kded4 is frozen or died. What does the command below return:

qdbus org.kde.kded /modules/ktimezoned

if it never returns then kded4 is frozen.

hi lamarque!

ok, as i just have a locked up session at hand, this is what i get running your test:

$ qdbus org.kde.kded /modules/ktimezoned
Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
$

$ps ax | grep kded
7775 ? Sl 0:00 kdeinit4: kded4 [kdeinit]
$

$qdbus org.kde.korgac
/
/MainApplication
/ac
$

hmm... looks promising -- you could be right!!!! How can I investigate furhter?

THANK YOU!!

Got go systemsettings -> Startup and Shutdown -> Service Manager and see if service "Time Zone" is running and marked to be auto-started. The service is the last one in the bottom section. If it is not running them start it and mark it to auto-start.

ok, "Time Zone" is set to "use" and is running on normal working sessions, on "lockuped" sessions the "service manager" goes inactive saying "cannot contact kded".

maybe it's time to disable/enable all (most) modules listed

The above suggests kmix and especially its pulseaudio component being the culprit. And indeed "#USE=-pulseaudio emerge -1 kmix" has resolved most of the lockups for now. This of course is a workaround.

There is still an issue with kdepim/kwallet enabled accounts where users are asked to enter a password for a wallet containing credentials for akonadi resources. These accounts suffer from lockups lasting up to a minute or so right before the password prompt. However these lockups resolve and do not leave kded sleeping. These lockups still cause

"D-Bus communication error 'org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply': 'Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.'"

messages without further context. All time zone related stuff is gone now.

I'm glad the problem seems fixed for most my needs now, however i'm disappointed by the "lockup enabled design" of kded (kde?). Maybe this is not kde's fault (maybe i have just messed up pulseaudio) but imho this should not lockup a desktop.

Thanks for all the answers, i will have a look at pluseaudio as time permits.

Hi,

i just stumbled over the same problem.

My fix: Rename (or remove) the $HOME/.pulse folder.

After that, everything works just fine again :-)

I get the same error message as the OP (I'm on KDE4.8.3 on mostly stable amd64), but everytime I start Krusader (possibly it also bugs other applications, but I haven't tested anything else yet). But, the whole Service Manager screen is grayed out for me, and I get the message that KDED could not be contacted. I have one process, kded4, that seems related.

I would be very grateful if somebody could help me get this fixed. I suppose it's a misconfiguration of sorts, because my machine at home seems unaffected (mostly the same installation, although on a different machine).

Erik

P.S.: I tried deleting ~/.pulse, but that didn't seem to help.

I have a similar problem with KDE 4.9.3. I do not have the .pulse directory. After booting, everything works for a while and then the problem happens.

Bumping this thread again. I just installed this week KDE 4.11.3 and this issue started happening to me too. Does anyone have any idea how to solve it?
