I am getting intermittent system hangs / freezes and segmentation faults while running the Installation DVD for AMD64. Could this be fault media. The only way to recover is a hard reboot. Any thoughts what could be wrong ?

could be GPU drivers, CPU overheating or BAD ram. Perhaps you should boot with 'nox' to rule out the GPU drivers.

I don't recommend to install the Gentoo from livedvds. Traditional tarballs are the best.

You got it all wrong, he is not trying to install from livedvd and there is NO installer on the livedvd and only a few guides on how to copy livedvd contents to a hard drive. The livedvd is perfect for installation for those that wish to have a full featured gui environment while Gentoo compiles for you.

Understood, sorry.
But if so then may user lostinspace2011 use another distro as the LiveDVD for the Gentoo installation?
