I just installed Gentoo yesterday. I installed some packages and at one point I had a message and told me to do eselect news to read it. So I did and I got this

Code:

2011-11-27-gnome3-unmask
Title                     Unmasking of and Upgrade to GNOME 3.2
  Author                    Nirbheek Chauhan <nirbheek@gentoo.org>
  Posted                    2011-11-26
  Revision                  1

We are pleased to announce the addition to tree and unmasking of GNOME-3.2.
Users are strongly encouraged to read the GNOME 3.2 Guide. GNOME 3 has
a massively changed interface and requires working 3D drivers for use, however
there is a fallback mode which is very similar to GNOME 2 and does not require
3D acceleration.

Please read the Gnome 3.2 Guide:
http://gnome.gentoo.org/howtos/gnome-3.2-upgrade.xml

I checked if I could update my gnome and it still shows 2.32 as the latest version by either doing emerge -pv gnome and emerge --update gnome. Both commands I still see gnome 2.32. Did I miss something ?

Gnome 3 is not masked anymore. It is now ~amd64 and ~x86.

If you really must have gnome 3 now, you can add the following lines to your package.keywords (you may need to create the file):
Code:
nano -w /etc/portage/package.keywords

add the line
Code:
gnome-base/*

you will probably need to add more of the dependencies to the file as portage tries to install gnome.

If you try this, be warned: mixing stable and unstable is not recommended and can cause unusual (and somewhat unique) problems.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.
